About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or physics.
  • At least 1 year of academic or professional hands-on experience performing fabrication, assembly, and/or testing.
  • At least 1 year of academic or professional experience using computer-aided design (CAD) to design parts or assemblies.
  • Ability to work with fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, combustion, structures and fracture mechanics, and materials, and apply them to hardware decisions.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes such as CNC milling or turning, welding, castings, or additive manufacturing, and proficiency with Design for Manufacturing/Assembly (DFMA) fundamentals.
  • Experience across the engineering lifecycle, from design trade and CAD through manufacturing, test, qualification, production, and flight/operations.
  • Experience performing risk assessments or supporting timely closure of root-cause investigations.
  • Analytical or scientific programming experience, such as Python or MATLAB.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% in support of testing, launching, and maintenance of engine hardware.
  • Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends when production, test, or launch timelines require it.
  • To comply with U.S. Government export regulations, applicants must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the responsible engineer for a Merlin engine component or system and act as the primary technical point of contact for the hardware throughout its lifecycle.
  • Lead Merlin development and qualification test campaigns for hardware improvements or root-cause investigations.
  • Design, analyze, produce, and operate Merlin propulsion hardware and systems across development and flight operations.
  • Partner with engineers and technicians across production, test, launch, avionics, guidance, navigation and control, software, mission management, and flight reliability to deliver flight-ready engines.
  • Resolve production, test, and launch issues by working hands-on with the hardware.
  • Brief commercial and government customers on hardware changes and issues as a technical authority for mission success.
  • Make risk-informed decisions under time pressure, including during test and launch campaigns.
  • Implement and maintain hardware and software verification and validation using automation and process controls that scale with flight rate.
  • Develop and improve engine maintenance procedures with launch-site and test teams to improve hardware readiness and reduce turnaround time.
  • Lead anomaly investigations related to the hardware, drive rapid resolution, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Build tools, particularly using artificial intelligence, to automate analysis, reduce repetitive work, and speed engineering decisions.
  • Run multiple concurrent projects and prioritize against program milestones and business needs while maintaining attention to detail.

Desired Qualifications

  • A master's degree in mechanical engineering or aeronautical/astronautical engineering.
  • At least 1 year of academic or professional experience related to combustion devices or rocket engine development.
  • Experience using Siemens NX (Unigraphics) and ANSYS; Fluent or another comparable computational fluid dynamics package is also desirable.
  • Ability to brief senior leadership and external customers on technical risk and hardware status.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with daily interactions with technicians, engineers, and managers.
  • Verbal and written communication skills for working with internal and external customers.

About the Company

SpaceX

Builds rockets and runs Starlink satellite internet

SpaceX builds and launches reusable rockets and spacecraft for NASA, the military, and companies, and it runs Starlink, a satellite internet service for homes and businesses. In 2020, its Dragon capsule became the first privately built spacecraft to carry astronauts to the International Space Station. Its Falcon 9 rocket lands its first stage so the booster can fly again, which cuts launch costs, while Starlink beams internet from low-orbit satellites to small dishes for a monthly fee. SpaceX also owns xAI, maker of the Grok chatbot and owner of the social network X, and is building Starship, a fully reusable rocket meant to carry people to the Moon and Mars. Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, and it is based in Starbase, Texas.
