Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A Medical Assistant certificate of completion from an appropriately accredited program or institute is required, although relevant work experience may substitute for the education certificate if post-education Medical Assistant certification is presented or obtained.
  • A credentialed Medical Assistant certification from a recognized accrediting or certifying body is required; accepted credentials include Certified Medical Assistant certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants, Registered Medical Assistant certification from American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant certification from the National Healthcare Association, National Certified Medical Assistant credential accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant certification from the National Association for Health Professionals.
  • If the required credentialed Medical Assistant certification is not obtained at hire, it must be obtained within 12 months of the hire date as a condition of continued employment.
  • A minimum of two years of previous experience is required.
  • An active American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification for healthcare providers is required.
  • A Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continuing Education certificate is required.
  • The role requires effective communication with patients, families, and the clinical team; flexibility in changing environments; strong time-management and prioritization skills; professional ethics; and patient confidentiality.
Responsibilities
  • Support medical providers by performing multi-skilled clinical tasks and assisting with patients’ healthcare management and clinical procedures under the supervision of a licensed physician.
  • Provide hands-on patient care while following regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies and practice within the clinical scope of practice and applicable state, federal, and University of Miami standards and regulations.
  • Support patients’ individual needs, including spiritual beliefs, faith, and practices, and provide emotional support while managing discomforts.
  • Prioritize and integrate multiple requests and work expectations, communicate with patients, families, and team members, and seek assistance when needed.
  • Participate in unit or clinic programs, meetings, team-building activities, and constructive conflict resolution.
  • Use available technology resources for communication, documentation, and locating information about clinical situations, diagnoses, and treatments.
  • Maintain current clinical competencies and pursue ongoing professional development related to the patient population and assignments.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulatory guidelines, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Assist providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment and examination rooms with required supplies, instruments, and materials.
  • Prepare patients for physician care by providing basic instructions and information about examination procedures while applying medical and surgical asepsis principles.
  • Perform vital signs, electrocardiograms, and phlebotomy, and document findings in the patient’s medical record.
  • Clean and sterilize medical instruments using sterile technique.
  • Schedule patients for tests and complete required laboratory-work forms.
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
  • Order, stock, and inventory supplies, and assist with clerical duties.
  • Safeguard University assets and follow University and unit-level policies and procedures.
