McCarthy Tétrault appoints inaugural pro bono counsel Bennett Jensen.

McCarthy Tétrault appoints inaugural pro bono counsel Bennett Jensen. The human rights advocate was once legal director at Egale Canada McCarthy Tétrault has appointed its inaugural dedicated pro bono counsel in human rights advocate Bennett Jensen. Jensen has defended marginalized groups and individuals throughout his career. He will bolster the firm's relationships with current and new community partners as it tackles public interest matters. Litigation and dispute resolution group leader Tom Sutton confirmed that Jensen would also be part of McCarthy Tétrault's litigation group. "Innovation is one of the firm's core values, and that extends to how we deliver our pro bono services. There are always opportunities to extend our reach individuals to communities who can benefit from the passion and expertise of our lawyers. While Bennett is joining the litigation group, his role is most certainly bigger than that, and we look forward to seeing how he'll build the connections between our groups and clients, allowing us to support more programs and initiatives," Sutton said in a statement. Before joining McCarthy Tétrault, Jensen was director of legal at Egale Canada. During his tenure, he re-established Egale Canada's internal legal function and spearheaded its strategic vision for progressing 2SLGBTQI legal rights as well as a nationwide response to anti-trans policy and legislative efforts. He was instrumental to the passage of Bill C-4, which blocked conversion therapy in Canada. He also worked with the federal government as director of legal to the justice minister and attorney general. In this role, he advised the attorney general, prime minister's office, and other ministers on high-profile litigation involving the federal government. Jensen was once a litigator and pro bono attorney at US firm Paul Weiss, where he spearheaded responses to wide-scale national human rights and civil rights crises, such as the Muslim travel ban and the child-parent separation crisis at the US-Mexico border. Last year, the Law Foundation of Ontario awarded him the Guthrie Award for his contributions to access to justice. He also received the Canadian Bar Association's National SAGDA Hero Award and Start Proud's Leader to be Proud of Award. Canadian Lawyer included him among its Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers in Canada last year, recognizing his work in human rights, advocacy, and criminal law. Moreover, he was among the American Bar Association's Top 40 Young Lawyers. "McCarthy Tétrault has a proud history of providing pro bono services that confront some of Canada's most pressing social and human rights issues. Bennett will take that service to the next level. His record is truly remarkable, and we're thrilled that he's bringing his immense passion and skill to the firm to help our lawyers help their communities," said Steeves Bujold, McCarthy Tétrault's chief inclusion officer.

Campaign launch: Get Offline and Talk in Alberta.

Campaign launch: Get Offline and Talk in Alberta. No matter where Action Canada come from or who Action Canada is, most of Action Canada just want its kids to have the freedom to learn, to be themselves, and to grow up healthy and safe in its communities. But recent law and policy changes in Alberta are negatively affecting all youth and causing polarization online. For some people, the most basic things - like what they're learning in school or accessing healthcare - are under attack. Any law or policy that limits a person's freedom to learn or be themselves violates the rights of Albertans. That's why Action Canada for Sexual Health & Rights, in collaboration with Egale, is relaunching its Get Offline and Talk campaign, which originally ran in New Brunswick in 2024. By encouraging Albertans to log off and have face-to-face conversations, Action Canada is pushing back against division and distraction so Action Canada can find common ground and stand up for laws and policies that make its communities healthier. Ensuring all Canadians have access to their sexual and reproductive health and rights means protecting access to healthcare, comprehensive sexuality education, and the resources to make decisions about if, when, and how to have and raise children in safe and healthy communities. When Action Canada is free to make its own healthcare and education decisions, Action Canada set its kids up for brighter futures and build stronger connections within its communities. By getting offline and talking to each other, Action Canada can take care of its neighbours and make sure all Albertans are free to be themselves. Quick facts: * 84% of Canadians agree that comprehensive sex-ed is an important part of overall health and well-being. * Research shows that even a 15-minute face-to-face empathetic conversation can foster understanding and change minds. * Its partners Egale Canada and Skipping Stone are leading legal challenges in Alberta and Saskatchewan to protect the rights and health of 2SLGBTQI communities. * The original Get Offline and Talk campaign ran in New Brunswick in September 2024, encouraging New Brunswickers to reject polarization driven by online misinformation and restrictions to trans rights and sex-ed. Following the campaign and steadfast advocacy of local organizations, New Brunswickers elected a new government in October 2024, which has reinstated some protections for reproductive health care and trans youth in schools. Egale Canada & Environics Research - 2SLGBTQI Inclusion.

Egale Canada & Environics Research - 2SLGBTQI Inclusion. Egale Canada commissioned Environics Research on national study on 2SLGBTQI inclusion in Canada. Environics Research conducted a national public opinion survey on behalf of Egale Canada exploring Canadians' perspectives on misinformation, healthcare, education, recreational sport, and safety for 2SLGBTQI communities. Egale Canada has released Rights, Safety, and Belonging: 2SLGBTQI Inclusion in Canada, a national opinion research report developed in partnership with Environics Research. The study examines how Canadians view key issues affecting 2SLGBTQI communities, including misinformation, access to healthcare, inclusion in education, participation in recreational sport, and overall safety and belonging. The study was conducted online by Environics Research between April 21 and May 1, 2026. The national survey gathered perspectives from 1,529 Canadians aged 18 and older, with representation across provinces, age groups, and sex. The findings point to a clear public recognition that more work is needed to advance 2SLGBTQI inclusion and safety across many areas, with more than half of Canadians believe Canada still has work to do before 2SLGBTQI people can be fully safe and free to be themselves. The report arrives at a moment when public conversations about artificial intelligence, online safety, and the spread of misinformation are becoming increasingly urgent. Many Canadians continue to express concern about the difficulty of distinguishing credible information from false or misleading content, particularly in digital spaces where harmful narratives can spread quickly. Through this research, Egale Canada aims to deepen public understanding of the issues affecting 2SLGBTQI people and identify opportunities to strengthen education, digital literacy, and community safety. While the survey represents a snapshot of current public sentiment, its findings provide important evidence to support ongoing advocacy, public education, and collaborative action. "At Environics, we believe research plays an important role in fostering informed public conversations. By understanding Canadians' perspectives on these issues, organizations like Egale can identify opportunities to strengthen education, digital literacy, community safety, and belonging. While this survey represents a snapshot in time, it provides important evidence to support ongoing advocacy, public education, and informed decision-making."
