Requirements
  • Valid Basic Life Support card.
  • Registered Medical Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant certification.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to prioritize and function in a high-stress environment.

  • Ability to work with potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Ability to use aseptic technique and personal protective equipment as necessary.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure the safety needs of the patient and unit are met by monitoring equipment and environmental safety factors and initiating corrective action.
  • Attend required safety, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, infection control, unit, staff, and in-service education programs.
  • Practice infection control according to Universal Blood and Body Precautions guidelines.
  • Respond to emergency situations including Code Blue, fire, evacuation, and disaster events.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels for patient and unit clerking supplies.
  • Collect laboratory samples, prepare skin, perform venipuncture, obtain electrocardiograms and vital signs, file charts, contact physicians’ offices, and fax documents.
  • Use clinical judgment and problem-solving to provide patient care, make safe decisions, prioritize activities, and seek direction when necessary.
  • Observe and promptly report changes in patients’ behavior, physical condition, or emotional status to the assigned registered nurse.
  • Perform assigned tasks accurately and within the required time frame.
  • Follow facility and Department of Nursing policies, including time and attendance, dress code, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Set up charts, maintain log books, and keep charts complete with appropriate patient records.
  • Modify the approach to patients based on age and provide appropriate safety interventions.
  • Recognize and respectfully address the values and cultural beliefs of patients and their families.
  • Convey essential patient information to the healthcare team and report critical or unusual situations promptly.
  • Provide psychological support to families and communicate patients’ condition and care using understandable terminology.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and clutter-free work area; identify, correct, and immediately report unsafe conditions.
  • Comply with hospital policies, state and federal rules, Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements, and Joint Commission requirements.
