Requirements
  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Basic knowledge of ICD-10 and Current Procedural Terminology coding.
  • Basic knowledge of third-party payors.
  • Basic knowledge of business mathematics.
  • General knowledge of time-of-service collection procedures.
  • Excellent customer service and telephone etiquette.
  • Minimum typing speed of 25 words per minute.
  • Ability to read and comprehend information.
  • Ability to accurately use applicable computer software and equipment for access processing.
  • Ability to follow established computer downtime procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when interacting with patients, physicians, families, co-workers, and the public regarding demographic, clinical, and financial information.
  • Ability to use hospital communication systems, including fax machines, pagers, telephones, copiers, scanners, and computers.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of prolonged sitting, extended telephone use requiring clear hearing and speaking, and manual dexterity to operate keyboards and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to work in an outpatient clinical environment.
Responsibilities
  • Train new and existing insurance specialists on insurance needs and processes in clinical offices.
  • Provide ongoing training and share updates and changes to insurance coverage.
  • Identify patients requiring pre-certification or pre-authorization when services are requested or when notified by another hospital or clinic department.
  • Follow up on accounts as indicated by system flags.
  • Contact insurance companies or employers to determine eligibility and benefits for requested services.
  • Follow up with patients, insurance companies, or providers to resolve insurance coverage issues and obtain financial resolution.
  • Use work queues within the EPIC system for scheduling, transition of care, and billing edits.
  • Perform medical necessity screening as required by third-party payors.
  • Document referrals, authorization and certification numbers in the EPIC system.
  • Initiate charge anticipation calculations and accurately identify anticipated charges and self-pay portions.
  • Communicate anticipated self-pay portions, co-payments, deductibles, co-insurance, and account balances to patients; refer self-pay patients and patients with limited or exhausted benefits to in-house financial counselors.
  • Maintain current knowledge of major payor payment provisions and regulations.
  • Assist Patient Financial Services with denial management issues and appeal denials based on medical necessity when needed.
  • Communicate workflow problems to management in a timely manner.
  • Assess self-pay patients for potential public assistance through registration and billing systems and provide financial counseling information.
  • Follow established work systems and communicate deviations, deficiencies, and process problems to a supervisor or manager.
  • Participate in educational programs addressing mandatory requirements and identified job or personal development needs.
  • Communicate respectfully with staff, physicians, patients, and families.
