Mastercard operates a global payments network that enables people and businesses to pay with cards and digital methods. Banks issue Mastercard-branded debit and credit cards, and Mastercard’s network authorizes transactions, clears them between banks, and settles funds, allowing merchants to receive payments securely and quickly. The company differentiates itself by leveraging a worldwide alliance of banks and merchants, transitioning from a cooperative of banks to a publicly traded company via its 2006 IPO, and continuously expanding its reach through partnerships and new payment technologies. Mastercard’s goal is to provide fast, secure, and convenient cross-border payment services and to grow its share of the global payments market by enabling merchants and customers to transact smoothly anywhere in the world.

Mastercard partners Flowcart for in-chat payments in Kenya, eyes Africa expansion

Mastercard has partnered with Flowcart to enable secure card payments within social-messaging conversations. The service will launch in Kenya before expanding to other East African markets, South Africa, Nigeria, and Côte d'Ivoire. Flowcart allows merchants to accept payments through embedded links, QR codes, or native checkout flows without needing standalone websites or conventional point-of-sale terminals. Tokenised card details support repeat purchases. The partnership's success depends on converting cash sales or winning payments from other networks rather than simply shifting existing card transactions. However, widespread mobile-money use in Kenya may limit card adoption. For Mastercard, which reported second-quarter 2026 net revenue of $9.3 billion, the partnership would need substantial expansion to meaningfully impact finances. Commercial terms and expected payment values were not disclosed.

KYA framework launched by Ant, Visa and Mastercard identifies AI agents but fails to address consumer trust gap

Ant International, Visa, and Mastercard launched the Know Your Agent framework on 10 September 2026 to verify agent identities in autonomous commerce. However, the system addresses operator traceability and certification but not consumer trust, which remains the binding constraint on the projected $3–5 trillion agentic commerce market. Consumer data reveals the gap. Klaviyo's 2026 report found 64% of consumers worry about AI handling their data, with only 13% trusting it completely. Accenture found 75% uncomfortable with AI making autonomous payments without human approval. Usercentrics reported only 9% would allow AI purchases above $25 without verification. Visa's $2.4 billion BioCatch acquisition in August 2026 signals a market shift towards behavioural verification. The technology monitors user interactions to build continuous profiles, moving beyond static identity to address whether agents behave within consumer authorisation.

Mastercard launches Wallet Pay in Singapore for cross-border transfers across 200+ countries

Mastercard has launched Wallet Pay in Singapore, supporting transfers across cards, wallets, and accounts in over 200 countries and territories. The company selected Singapore as its launch venue because digital wallets there already support online, in-store, and cross-border transactions. The launch aligns with Singapore's regulator promoting cross-border payment linkages. Mastercard's move comes as competition intensifies in the global money movement space, with rival Visa Direct also offering similar services and emphasising interoperability. The service aims to streamline international money transfers through digital wallet infrastructure.

Payment firms to co-develop framework to recognise AI agents that purchase on users' behalf.

Payment firms to co-develop framework to recognise AI agents that purchase on users' behalf. This comes as the industry prepares for the growth of agentic global consumer commerce Published Thu, Sep 10, 2026 · 12:10 PM * Visa, Mastercard and Ant International will collaborate via a Monetary Authority of Singapore platform that brings financial institutions and tech providers together. PHOTO: REUTERS [BENGALURU] Ant International, Mastercard and Visa have launched an initiative to develop common standards to identify and verify artificial intelligence agents that can make purchases on behalf of users. The companies said on Thursday (Sep 10) they had begun collaborating on a Know-Your-Agent interoperability framework that would allow card networks, digital wallets, agent platforms and online marketplaces to recognise trusted AI agents across different payment ecosystems while maintaining their own approval and risk management processes. The initiative comes as the payments industry prepares for the growth of agentic global consumer commerce, in which AI agents evolve from making recommendations to completing purchases on behalf of users. The framework builds on the companies' existing protocols, including Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, Mastercard Verifiable Intent and Ant International's Agentic Mobile Protocol. The companies said the initiative could help reduce integration costs and accelerate the launch of new agentic services by providing greater trust and risk visibility across participating networks. Ant International, Mastercard and Visa said they would collaborate through BuildFin.ai, a platform convened by the Monetary Authority of Singapore that brings together financial institutions, technology providers and researchers to develop AI solutions for financial services. Ant International, Mastercard, Visa develop AI agent framework.

Ant International, Mastercard, Visa develop AI agent framework. Ant International, a Singapore-headquartered fintech company, said on September 10 that it had started working with Mastercard and Visa on a Know-Your-Agent framework. The framework aims to streamline how card networks, digital-wallet ecosystems, agent platforms, and marketplaces onboard and identify AI agents using shared trust signals. Each network would retain its own verification and decision-making processes. The companies said the effort builds on existing protocols, including Mastercard Verifiable Intent, Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, and Ant International's Agentic Mobile Protocol. It will focus on operator traceability, shared certification requirements, and continuous transaction monitoring to reduce duplicate onboarding and identity checks. The companies also plan to advance the approach through BuildFin.ai, part of the Monetary Authority of Singapore's Financial AI Builder Program. The effort comes as the Monetary Authority of Singapore has moved to develop safeguards for AI agents in finance. Recent Ant International developments.
