↑ 11%What's New in Safeguard 9.0: PAM that's simpler to run, easier to prove, and broader in coverage. 1 Sep 2026 Safeguard 9.0 by One Identity is now available, built around three things privileged access teams care about most: less infrastructure to manage, a stronger case to bring to auditors, and coverage that reaches further into the systems your teams already rely on. Here's what's new. Less hardware and licensing to manage For years, appliance refreshes relied on the vendor. Safeguard customers also had to source and renew their own Windows license. Safeguard 9.0 changes that, as it now runs on a Windows 11 Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) base operating system with the license embedded and pre-installed, and Privileged Sessions move to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Both are hardware-agnostic, so you can deploy on hardware that meets the system requirements, with validated performance available on current Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant generations. Day-to-day operation gets lighter too. The part of Safeguard that manages and records privileged sessions no longer needs a separate license file just to keep working, and software updates install faster with less disruption. Less to buy, less to track, and fewer maintenance windows to negotiate. A security policy you can put in front of an auditor Compliance frameworks keep raising the bar on encryption standards and Safeguard 9.0 meets it. The platform now supports Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 and adds a cipher selector that lets you set exactly which ciphers are allowed, so instead of accepting a fixed, generic list, you can show auditors a policy you defined and enforce yourself. Older systems that haven't caught up yet still connect safely, so nothing breaks during the transition. The session management side of Safeguard also adds broader protection against the Terrapin attack. Stronger algorithms come by default, with a documented path for the legacy peers that cannot be upgraded yet. The result is a named, enforceable cryptographic policy you can put in front of an auditor instead of a fixed list you have to explain. Less standing privilege, fewer blind spots A key element of Zero Trust is the removal of standing privilege, and this release gives you a further enablers. Safeguard 9.0 makes this easier: by elevating a group membership just-in-time (JIT) for a single access request and demote it afterward, but scoped to a specific asset rather than granted everywhere the group applies. The standing-privilege footprint shrinks with no extra accounts or groups to manage. Coverage gets broader too. Safeguard 9.0 adds account discovery for ESXi hosts, which closes a common blind spot in the virtual estate that usually gets filled by manual tracking. Safeguard 9.0 will also manage remote desktop access using an account from Microsoft's cloud identity service (Entra ID), with the password and multi-factor authentication still safely stored and managed by Safeguard. Teams moving their identity systems to the cloud no longer have to choose between that move and keeping remote access properly controlled. A first look at AI-assisted support Safeguard 9.0 also introduces a built-in assistant in the web interface. Administrators can ask configuration and troubleshooting questions directly in the product instead of searching documentation or opening a support ticket for something routine. It's a useful convenience on its own, and the first step in a broader effort to build AI assistance into Safeguard through 2026. Full details on every feature are in the release notes. US church management software provider Ministry Brands hires GC from Reach. Chris Wassenaar replaces Renee McDonough, who joined One Identity in May 19 August 2026 Chris Wassenaar US church management software provider Ministry Brands has hired Chris Wassenaar as general counsel, replacing Renee McDonough who left in May. Wassenaar joins from digital record keeping business Reach, where he was chief legal and compliance officer. At Ministry Brands, he will lead the company's legal affairs function. Atlanta-based Ministry Brands supports more than 90,000 churches and non-profit organisations with member and donor management software, including digital giving, accounting, websites, apps and other tech services. Its platform facilitates more than $6.45bn in charitable giving annually. The company said it had also hired Brett Bowman as chief financial officer. These new features bring unmatched flexibility and security to Active Directory environments, supporting customers where they are today and where they want to go in the future. Secure REST API for direct integration In this release, One Identity addressed Active Roles customers' desire to integrate directly with external platforms via API. For this reason, One Identity LLC now provide a secure REST API which enables integrations to directly modify AD and Entra objects and attributes. This capability ensures user data stays accurate across systems, while preserving governance and limiting permissions to only the operations required. Enhanced SPML support To further demonstrate its commitment to supporting Entra ID, version 8.5 also offers enhanced SPML support. Enhanced SPML support enables the creation, update, deletion and LookUp for proper data exchange for Entra Groups through the active Roles SPML provider. This further enhances Active Roles' support for Entra ID. Windows LAPS (LAPS 2.0) support Active Roles now provides Windows LAPS (LAPS 2.0) support alongside Microsoft LAPS (LAPS 1.0) for domain joined devices. From version 8.5 onwards, organizations can enhance the security of their infrastructure by managing LAPS related permissions through Active Roles for both encrypted and non-encrypted passwords. Improved Federation support in RSTS Improved Federation support in RSTS (redistributable secure token server) is also included in Active Roles version 8.5, providing additional options for configuring authentication to the Web Interface and the REST API. This important feature, which can be installed as a separate component, offers expanded configuration options via the Active Roles Configuration Center, including SSL configuration, signing certificate management, redirection, and cluster management. One Identity now independent, will set up shop in Cork to focus on identity security. European shift for company born out of Dell aligns with long-term investments One Identity is becoming an independent company and shifting its operations to Europe. A release from the firm says it will set up a new global headquarters in Cork, Ireland, and provide unified identity governance in a bid to capitalize on a combined identity governance and administration (IGA) and privileged access management (PAM) market estimated at around $10 billion. "Identity is now the control plane for enterprise security," says Praerit Garg, CEO of One Identity. "Almost all security breaches can be traced back to identity compromises. Most organizations are still governing it with tools that were built for a different era. AI is accelerating the problem faster than most organizations realize: every agent and every automated workflow are identities that need to be governed. Our customers are dealing with environments that are more distributed and harder to govern than anything legacy frameworks were designed for." Garg says operating as a standalone company "gives us the focus this problem requires and the speed our customers demand." Per the release, more than 80 percent of the One Identity engineering organization is based in Europe, including Chief Technology Officer Gihan Munasinghe and other key leadership roles. The move is therefore a natural step, building on long-standing investment across the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, and elsewhere in Europe. One Identity was founded in 2016 when it was separated from cybersecurity company SonicWall in Dell's sale of its software group to private equity firms Francisco Partners and Elliott Management. As part of this transaction, Dell Software also became its own entity, Quest Software, and although One Identity was spun off as an independent brand, it remained part of the Quest family. In 2021, the company acquired OneLogin, a provider of identity and access management software; OneLogin has since become its main product.
