Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of four (4) years of customer service or clerical office experience.
  • Be able to utilize all features afforded by word processing and other required software and personal computers used by the assigned work unit.
  • Possess the physical, developmental, and mental ability to perform the job tasks, responsibilities, and duties.
  • Be able to work before, during, or after an emergency and perform duties outside the normal scope, location, or schedule when temporarily assigned by the County.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the public, employees, and officials with Building Division processes according to established procedures.
  • Provide information regarding permitting, inspections, certificates of occupancy, lien searches, and power releases.
  • Assist customers with the online permitting portal and kiosks.
  • Perform routine clerical duties and respond to inquiries as directed or trained by the supervisor.
  • Use word-processing, spreadsheet, and permitting software.
  • Greet and assess lobby customers and route them appropriately.
  • Instruct lobby and telephone customers in using and navigating the permitting system.
  • Provide hands-on kiosk training for customers conducting permitting business.
  • Use maps and online databases to retrieve property information needed for the permitting process.
  • Receive and distribute permit-related mail and email communications.
  • Monitor the lobby queue to ensure customers receive needed assistance.
  • Complete, compile, prepare, and maintain records in record-keeping systems.
  • Enter Notices of Commencement into the permitting system as needed.
  • Draft, prepare, process, and research forms, letters, reports, summaries, and other documents.
  • Receive, log, and route incoming checks, plans, and permitting documents according to office procedures.
  • Support Permit Technicians by conducting research, communicating with customers, and uploading documents into permit records.
  • Support the Permit Technician on Call by logging and returning calls as needed.
  • Route incoming calls using a multi-line telephone system.
  • Operate the switchboard as needed.
  • Follow established office methods, procedures, routines, and written or oral instructions.
  • Interact professionally with the public, officials, and other employees.
  • Operate and provide general care and maintenance for office machines and equipment.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bilingual English and Spanish language ability.
  • Permitting or construction industry experience.
  • Notary Public designation.

Polk County Fire Rescue creating 50 new positions with SAFER Grant

Polk County Fire Rescue creating 50 new positions with SAFER grant. Bartow, Fla. (Nov. 19, 2025) - Polk County Fire Rescue was awarded a $16-million federal grant to fund 50 new positions. PCFR was awarded the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the 50 positions. The program is designed to help fire rescue departments nationwide increase and maintain staffing levels. It also helps with response and operational standards compliance. PCFR Chief Shawn Smith is ready to start recruiting candidates for the new positions. "Polk County Fire Rescue is excited to bring new talent into our organization with the help of the SAFER grant," Smith said. "We are grateful for this new federal funding which will help us reach our staffing goals." The 50 new SAFER grant-supported firefighter positions are part of more than 100 positions PCFR is working to fill. The Polk County Board of County Commissioners recently approved funding for fire personnel positions. Polk County names new leaders for Health and Human Services Agency. - Robin Elliott was named Polk HHSA Director. POLK COUNTY - Polk County has announced the appointment of Robin Elliott as the new Director of the Polk County Health and Human Services Agency. In addition, Natalie Trachsel has been promoted to serve as Assistant Director of the agency. "Congratulations to both Robin and Natalie as they step into these crucial positions within the Health and Human Services Agency," said Polk County Manager Marche Pittman. "We are confident that their leadership will greatly benefit the Polk community."
