About the company

Cleveland-Cliffs is a vertically integrated steel maker and iron ore producer, the largest flat-rolled steel producer in North America. It controls the full chain from iron ore mining to downstream finishing, processing, and distribution, forming a closed-loop system that secures raw-material supply and tightens cost and quality control. Its products include hot-rolled, cold-rolled, and coated steel, as well as iron ore sold to other steelmakers, with a focus on serving the North American market across automotive, infrastructure, and manufacturing sectors. Unlike many peers, Cleveland-Cliffs differentiates itself through end-to-end integration and a strong regional footprint, enabling customized solutions and reliable supply for its customers. The company aims to maintain material availability, translate supply-chain advantages into stable pricing and quality, and grow its leadership in North American steel production.

  • Middletown's $1 billion rebuild preserves 2,300 jobs and targets first-quarter 2030 completion.
  • Hamilton consolidation keeps steel output steady while shifting mix toward hotter-rolled products.

What critics are saying

  • Tariffs killed Hamilton cold-rolled and coated demand, forcing production into Nanticoke and raising execution risk.
  • Customers rejected the green-premium strategy, exposing Cliffs to policy whiplash, carbon backlash, and margin compression.

Cleveland-Cliffs posts best quarter in three years with $612M adjusted EBITDA

Cleveland-Cliffs posted its strongest quarter in three years, chief financial officer Celso Goncalves said on an earnings call Monday. Third-quarter revenue rose 18.5% year on year to $5.6 billion, and net income was $165 million, against a $234 million loss a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA reached $612 million, above the company's $575 million guidance. Steel shipments hit 4.2 million net tons, up 3%, and the average net selling price rose $53 per ton to $1,177. Unit costs fell $17 per net ton. The steelmaker expects adjusted EBITDA of $715 million in the fourth quarter. It estimates EBITDA above $4 billion next year, and says paying down debt remains its top priority.

Cleveland-Cliffs shares jump 16.3% to $14.10 on $612M adjusted EBITDA; DCF model says 55% undervalued

Cleveland-Cliffs shares jumped 16.3% in one day to $14.10 after the steelmaker returned to profit in the third quarter and issued guidance pointing to higher future profitability. Adjusted EBITDA came in at $612 million. The stock has risen 52.4% over 90 days, but its one-year total shareholder return is still down 12.9%. Valuation views differ. A widely followed narrative puts fair value at $12.60, which makes the shares 12% overvalued. Simply Wall St's discounted cash flow model estimates $31.36, which would put the shares about 55% below fair value. Risks include looser US steel tariffs and another spike in energy and input costs.

Cleveland-Cliffs sees over $4B adjusted EBITDA in 2027 as Q3 EBITDA doubles on tariffs

Cleveland-Cliffs said third-quarter EBITDA doubled, helped by tariffs that have cut steel imports by 35% to 40% from levels before Section 232. Management called the trade environment "rational" and said mills ran at full utilisation, pushing unit costs $17 per ton below guidance. The company expects adjusted EBITDA of more than $4 billion in 2027, assuming current market conditions. Capital expenditure should rise from $700 million in 2026 to just over $1 billion in 2027. Free cash flow will go first to debt reduction, with leverage targeted below the 2.0x-2.5x range by mid-2027. Management ruled out issuing stock. Over 55% of clients have signed 2027 contracts, with "take-or-pay" clauses becoming the norm. The Burns Harbor furnace reline is delayed to April 2028 to meet demand.

Cleveland-Cliffs Q3 EBITDA doubles to $612M, with $715M Q4 forecast and $4B 2027 outlook

Cleveland-Cliffs said third-quarter adjusted EBITDA more than doubled to $612 million from $286 million in the second quarter. Higher shipments, stronger selling prices and lower unit costs drove the result, which beat the company's $575 million outlook. The steelmaker expects fourth-quarter adjusted EBITDA of about $715 million. It sees a path to more than $4 billion in adjusted EBITDA in 2027, helped by contract renewals, firmer pricing and a bigger contribution from Stelco. Cleveland-Cliffs postponed the Burns Harbor C blast furnace reline to April 2028, preserving about 500,000 tons of 2027 production. It aims to cut leverage below 2.5 times by mid-2027 using operating cash flow and asset-sale proceeds, and does not plan to issue stock.
