Requirements
  • Strength in one self-identified track: experimental-first, where strengths and approaches rely on mining naturally occurring motifs, using chemical intuition to design sensors, and experimental testing to effectively select candidates, OR computation-first where strengths and approaches rely on de novo design methods (reducing the number and breadth of experimental loops).
  • Structural biology and biophysics competency related to optical and electrophysiological measurements.
  • PhD in a relevant science and engineering field with demonstrated strong independent ideation and execution or BS/MS with extensive industry experience (> 5 years).
  • Quantitative judgment for designing experiments under real-world constraints, matching roadmap goals to instrument capabilities and lab throughput.
  • Demonstrated precision in experimental work and scientific project management.
  • Strong technical communication skills across the relevant scientific fields and teams.
Responsibilities
  • Design new biosensors composed of allosteric switches, signal transduction motifs (e.g., linkers), reporter proteins, site-specific chemical modifications, and bioelectronic interfaces.
  • Design new constructs.
  • Guide wet lab screening.
  • Work with the hardware team to select performant constructs.
  • Mentor and manage junior scientists.
  • Work with Melody’s outside academic collaborators and CRO partners.
  • Set up de novo design and directed evolution workflows for our foundry.
  • Design and validate your own biosensor scaffolds against ions, small molecules, and peptides.
  • Integrate experimental feedback from devices and revamp design workflow.
Desired Qualifications
  • 3+ years industry experience in protein design and selection.
  • Ability to write custom scripts for data analysis and interfacing with lab instruments.
  • Working ability in both experimental methods and computational tools for protein design.
  • Conceptual command of allostery and protein dynamics.
  • Conceptual command of the electronic nose field.
  • 2+ years of team management and mentoring experience. We are especially interested in those with a track record of coordinating across chemists, materials scientists, hardware engineers, software/data scientists, vendors, and academic collaborators.

ARIA awards $26.7M to launch two UK research organisations tackling brain mapping and ecological intelligence

Convergent Research and the UK's Advanced Research and Invention Agency have launched two new Focused Research Organisations: Meridial and Echo Labs. Both emerged from Convergent's UK FRO Founder Residency programme, marking the organisation's first major expansion outside the US. Meridial received £14 million from ARIA to build a microscopy platform for mapping synaptic connections in living animals over time. The infrastructure aims to help researchers observe how brain connectivity changes across development, disease and learning. Echo Labs secured £7 million to develop infrastructure for measuring and forecasting ecosystem conditions. The organisation will work to represent natural systems in ways that can be modelled and compared continuously. Both organisations operate as non-profit, startup-like entities designed to tackle specific scientific bottlenecks by creating shared tools and infrastructure over fixed timeframes.

Convergent Research Announces Major New Funding Commitment To Forest Neurotech

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Convergent Research today announced a new $14 million funding commitment from former Google CEO Eric Schmidt to Forest Neurotech, an initiative designed to create next-generation brain-computer-interfaces (BCIs) for individuals with neurological injuries or diseases. In addition to support from Eric Schmidt, Forest Neurotech has received funding from Griffin Catalyst, the philanthropic organization of Citadel CEO Kenneth C. Griffin, the Riley Susan Bechtel Foundation, and James Fickel. Forest Neurotech is developing a novel ultrasound-based BCI that can sense and modulate the whole brain without penetrating it. Most BCIs rely on invasive procedures that access a limited region of the brain while damaging brain tissue and causing harmful biological responses. Forest’s ultrasound technology reaches deep into the brain, providing researchers with a minimally invasive platform to develop diagnostics, monitoring, and therapeutics across the whole brain

Ben Reinhardt Is On A Mission To Make Sci-Fi A Reality

A Science Fiction future inspired by Ada Palmer’s Terra Ignota Series Jocelynn PearlWhen Ben Reinhardt was an undergrad at Caltech, he often passed a mural painted on the back of a building on campus. It included a quote from Theodore von Kármán, a scientist and engineer who served as the first director of JPL: "Scientists study the world as it is, engineers create the world that never has been." Since his days as an undergrad, Reinhardt’s been trying to build the world as it could be, one filled with the imaginings of science fiction novels like Ada Palmer’s Terra LUNA3 Ignota Series.But a recent paper published in Nature described a decline in scientific progress over the last few decades.
