Requirements
  • A current approved Alabama Board of Nursing Registered Nurse license or a multistate license is required, or the ability to obtain one before starting.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Provider training is required, or it must be obtained within the stated start-date timeframe.
  • An associate degree is required at minimum.
  • Candidates must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Applicable roles require the listed certifications, including Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Trauma Nursing Core Course, Neonatal Resuscitation, and Intermediate Fetal Monitoring.
  • Candidates must be able to communicate clearly and accurately, delegate to team members and students, address conflict and stressful situations, and use electronic mail, telephone, and texting.
  • Candidates must be able to work scheduled shifts, including every other weekend.
  • Candidates must be able to perform medium physical work, including lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects, and tolerate prolonged standing and walking.
  • Candidates must be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, sit, stoop, and run in an emergency.
  • Candidates must be able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation, possess stamina for prolonged shifts, and have normal or corrected hearing and vision.
  • Physical presence onsite is essential.
Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct quality, compassionate nursing care while maintaining professional nursing practice standards and positive therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Supervise LPNs, patient care assistants, unit secretaries, orthopedic technicians, and other non-licensed staff.
  • Assess each assigned patient on admission and on an ongoing basis, including physical, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, pain, nutritional, functional, developmental, age-related, and discharge-planning needs.
  • Plan, provide, and document patient and significant-other education after identifying barriers to learning.
  • Evaluate and regularly reevaluate patient care and coordinate care planning with patients, families, providers, and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
  • Assign and delegate nursing care to team members according to patient needs and team-member capabilities.
  • Apply safety principles when performing care.
  • Accurately document observations, care provided, and changes in the care plan.
  • Provide accurate handoff reports and participate in unit-based huddles.
  • Assist with performance-improvement activities, including serving on performance-improvement teams, assisting with performance measures, and supporting and implementing necessary changes.
  • Perform initial and annual competency activities for the applicable job class.
  • Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Perform compliance requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook and adhere to DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • Create positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers, colleagues, and self in accordance with DCH Behavioral Standards.
  • Perform essential job functions safely and identify and reduce practices, risks, and hazards that could harm patients, visitors, or employees.
  • Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and the intranet.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
