Nonprofit child welfare and disability services
The New York Foundling is a nonprofit social services agency for children, families and adults with developmental disabilities in New York City, nearby counties and Puerto Rico. Its child welfare programs place children with foster families and send therapists and caseworkers into homes to keep families together. It also runs residences and day programs for adults with disabilities, mental health clinics and Head Start preschools, and it opened Haven Academy, a Bronx charter school designed for children in the child welfare system. Medicaid and government agencies pay for most services at set rates, with added support from donors. Three Sisters of Charity founded it in 1869 as a home for abandoned babies, and it is based in New York City.
