Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • California Phlebotomy Certification (CPTI or CPTII) is required.
  • Must successfully complete and maintain BLS certification.
Responsibilities
  • Answer, screen, and transfer telephone calls.
  • Perform venipunctures and finger sticks or heel sticks on infants and children using appropriate techniques for different age groups.
  • Obtain specimens from designated patients accurately and efficiently using standardized venipuncture technique.
  • Assist with procuring other clinical specimens, including bone marrow, and support other procedures as required.
  • Comply with established hospital and departmental policies to maintain a safe, organized, and efficient workplace.
  • Identify patients using two identifiers, collect and prepare specimens, label specimens in the patient room, and submit complete paperwork for clinical assays.
  • Process specimens according to laboratory procedures.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies and communicate findings to appropriate personnel.
  • Coordinate with laboratory and hospital personnel to report laboratory results efficiently.
  • Discard specimens after testing or store them for future reference as appropriate.
  • Draw blood from inpatients, outpatients, and emergency-room patients as needed.
  • Maintain current competency and credentialing files.
  • Address clerical problems associated with test requests and reports.
  • Follow principles of asepsis and antisepsis when performing duties.
  • Evaluate current work systems and suggest or support improvements in patient-care quality.
  • Greet and assist patients and visitors by obtaining appropriate information and paperwork.
  • Perform laboratory office clerical functions and communicate with hospital personnel by phone and verbally.
  • Order, receive, store, and distribute supplies; keep work areas stocked and clean.
  • Perform requested clerical duties and projects, accept delegated assignments, and perform other job-related duties.
  • Perform patient-related responsibilities according to the standard of care and patients’ specific needs.
  • Process incoming and outgoing test results, outpatient appointments, and other requests for laboratory services.
  • Interact with others calmly and courteously to support professional and cooperative working relationships.
  • Support customer relations through clear communication, active listening, and considerate interaction.
  • Label and prepare specimens for laboratory distribution or outside testing, including centrifuging, aliquoting, and freezing.
  • Understand and participate in the organization-wide and departmental quality improvement program through orientation, education, improvement, and quality-planning activities.
  • Procure and process laboratory specimens, perform venipuncture according to established laboratory procedures, and provide clerical support in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of college with a major in biological sciences, chemistry, or an equivalent field is preferred.
  • At least one year of experience working in a clinical laboratory or anatomic pathology laboratory is preferred.
