- Demonstrate familiarity with fundamental environmental concepts as they apply to spill prevention, water pollution control, air pollution emissions, waste generation, and hazardous material handling.

- Have a bachelor's degree in environmental science, chemistry, engineering, or equivalent experience.
- Be able to continually retain and apply new information.
- Have dexterity to operate office machinery and necessary tools or machinery.
- Be able to sit for long periods at a desk or computer.
- Be willing and able to safely enter production areas and work in extreme hot and cold temperatures while wearing required personal protective equipment.
- Have mobility to move among the administrative office, rod mill, and melt shop; strength and stamina to walk long distances and remain standing for a full shift; and ability to safely walk up and down stairs.
- Be able to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
- Have above-average computer skills.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and submit environmental permit applications and renewals for new development and modifications to existing processes and equipment, including construction and operation air permits, NPDES permits for individual discharge and general stormwater discharges, and an IEMA radiation permit.
- Oversee activities related to the sanitary wastewater treatment plant, non-transient non-community potable water supply, and on-site water treatment.
- Oversee ongoing environmental compliance records and reporting, including Clean Air Act permit conditions, annual hazardous waste reporting, air emissions reports, greenhouse gas reporting, CEDRI, EPCRA Tier 2, NPDES DMR, Toxic Release Inventory, and radioactive materials.
- Coordinate transport and disposal for manifested hazardous and special waste shipments, primarily seven waste streams totaling approximately 2,500 trucks per year.
- Implement facility plans required by regulations and permits, including SPCC plans, SWPP plans, and contingency plans.
- Compile and submit required governmental and corporate reports.
- Lead environmental audits and inspections conducted by governing agencies regarding permit conditions and regulatory requirements.
- Review and recommend improvements to existing environmental strategies.
- Investigate environmental incidents and develop action plans as necessary.
- Oversee and advise environmental consultants in areas of need.
- Participate in renewable and alternative energy and sustainability discussions.
- Attend Steel Manufacturing Association Environmental Committee and Illinois Environmental Regulatory Group meetings routinely.
- Provide annual HAZWOPER or RCRA safety training for personnel.
- Participate in weekly management staff meetings.
- Supervise the Environmental Supervisor.
- Report to work as scheduled, follow related SJPs, adhere to policies and work rules, and comply with SSC safety rules.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
- HAZWOPER certification, Potable Water Supply Operator certification, Class D/K Wastewater Operator certification, and radiation safety knowledge are helpful; training will be offered.
- Experience reviewing engineering plans and contract specifications is a plus.
- Ten or more years of related experience is preferred.
