About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of experience leading technical teams, including directly managing engineers and managing through other managers.
  • Experience hiring, developing, and exiting people, setting team standards, and being accountable for team delivery.
  • Experience owning delivery, operations, vendor relationships, and stakeholder commitments, with accountability for technology outcomes.
  • Ability to regularly write and ship production code.
  • Ability to translate a short business request into technical implications, costs, and risks.
  • Real backend and infrastructure depth sufficient to be accountable for work performed by others.
  • Experience working in an environment where designers ship their own code.
  • Experience directing contractors and vendors and holding their output to the same standard as internal work.
  • Ability to discuss technical tradeoffs with an SVP, make a case, and commit once a decision is made.
  • Ability to act as the technical voice with editorial and commercial leaders and translate between technical and business contexts.
  • Hands-on familiarity with TypeScript, Node.js, and modern tooling.
  • Depth with Payload CMS on PostgreSQL, or equivalent depth with a headless, code-first content management system.
  • Content modeling and API design using GraphQL and REST.
  • Experience with Next.js and Astro with React islands.
  • Application security experience, including authentication and authorization enforcement, secrets management, dependency hygiene, and least privilege.
  • Use of AI tools as a core part of development workflows and judgment about when not to use them.
  • Experience with identity and payments, including SSO/OIDC, Stripe, entitlements, and paywall logic.
  • AWS experience with Lambda via OpenNext, S3, CloudFront, IAM, and RDS, and with containers on Kubernetes.
  • Security operations experience, including attack-surface and asset inventory, decommissioning, access lifecycle, credential rotation, and forensic logging.
  • Incident response experience, including containment, evidence, and reporting based on log evidence.
  • Privacy and compliance experience, including GDPR, CCPA, consent and tracking, and data retention.
  • Experience with PHP, MySQL, Python/FastAPI, Elasticsearch, and message brokers.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and grow the technology team across engineering, delivery, and operations, owning hiring, performance, development, and difficult personnel conversations, and manage through a manager as the function scales.
  • Shape technical strategy with the SVP, including architecture direction, build-versus-buy-and-integrate decisions, and platform direction; provide the thinking and execute delivery following the SVP's final decisions.
  • Turn product direction into shipped work by owning scoping, technical requirements, sequencing, and commitments to editorial and business stakeholders.
  • Run delivery across the technology function, owning cadence, dependencies, and visibility into what is coming and when.
  • Be accountable for shipped work by setting standards, reviewing architecture, overruling it on technical grounds when required, and establishing mechanisms that catch problems before production.
  • Write and ship code weekly, carrying hands-on work alongside the team.
  • Stand up new products and evolve existing products across news, subscriptions and identity, data, and events, including winding down systems replaced by the new platform.
  • Lead security across company systems, including exposure, access, unnecessary running services, third-party risk, and incident response.
  • Own the content and data spine by shaping the content model, maintaining the CMS, building APIs and MCP services used across products and teams, and completing that shift across the rest of the estate.
  • Own the operational layer, including environments, continuous integration, previews, observability, and the production deployment path.
  • Own internal business systems and tooling, including integrations across CRM, events, email, and subscriptions, and services enabling business teams to work with company data.
  • Direct contractors and vendors who extend the team and hold their output to the same standard as internal work.
  • Get sound AI-assisted work from non-engineers live quickly and assess when that work is not sound.
  • Partner with editorial and business leadership to turn ideas into shipped features at newsroom pace.
Desired Qualifications
  • A background in media or publishing is a strong plus, but is not required.
