Requirements
- An associate degree or higher in nursing, respiratory therapy, related biological science including human donation science, or a medical school degree, including foreign degree programs, is required.
- Critical care experience or organ donor management experience is preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook is preferred.
- Experience with electronic medical records such as Cerner, Epic, or Meditech is preferred.
- Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator certification is preferred and required within 18 months of employment.
- A license or certification in nursing, respiratory therapy, or related biological science is preferred.
- Ability to fulfill on-call obligations and work cases for up to 24 consecutive hours is required.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including a face shield, safety glasses, goggles, disposable surgical gloves, shoe covers, and sterile gowns, is required.
- Employees must comply with the organization's motor vehicle driving policy.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate potential organ donor referrals and medically manage organ donors.
- Allocate donated organs and complete moderately complex procedures on brain-dead donors.
- Perform moderately complex testing with portable bedside laboratory devices in accordance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments standards.
- Perform moderately complex procedures under the guidance of the Medical Director.
- Manage donors during organ recovery, including hemodynamic management, medication therapy, and ventilation.
- Provide real-time clinical and administrative expertise and oversight during referral and recovery processes for organ cases.
- Complete referral evaluations to determine organ and tissue donor suitability based on Organ Procurement Organization, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and recommendations.
- Complete hospital medical record reviews, including reviewing the history of present illness, past medical history, malignancies, and surgical interventions or treatments.
- Collaborate with hospital staff to evaluate and physiologically manage donors to achieve optimal organ function.
- Collect and label blood, culture, and typing specimens according to required procedures.
- Review and document required donor-record information, including laboratory results, diagnostics, and procedural records.
- Allocate donated organs efficiently, equitably, and timely according to organizational and Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing policies.
- Ensure organs and tissue are recovered and preserved to maximize utilization according to organizational and Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing policies.
- Maintain documentation, records, and confidentiality in compliance with organizational and Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing policies.
- Participate in process-improvement and data-development projects, including case reviews and research opportunities.
- Contribute to interdepartmental training and education through preceptorship, case-study presentations, and learning events.
- Fulfill additional individual and departmental directives and responsibilities as designated.
