Under its self-government agreement, it makes laws for its citizens and manages settlement lands. Departments provide education, wellness and housing services, while the Heritage department preserves cultural resources and supports Hän language revitalization. The General Assembly and Councils direct the administration, with programs financed through Financial Transfer Agreements and contribution funding. Modern self-government took effect in 1998, and the administrative headquarters are in Dawson City, Yukon, Canada.
