About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related engineering or materials discipline.
  • At least 5 years of industrial research and development or process development experience in a manufacturing environment, developing and scaling processes rather than only sustaining existing ones.
  • Hands-on experience with rolled goods and web converting, such as paper, textiles, nonwovens, films, or membranes.
  • Direct experience developing a surface application or deposition process, such as spray, slot die, gravure, knife-over-roll, dip/nip, curtain, or screen.
  • Working command of web handling fundamentals, including tension control, web path, line speed, and drying and curing.
  • A systems view of a production process, including reasoning about how upstream unit operations constrain downstream operations rather than optimizing a single step in isolation.
  • Strong experimental design and data analysis skills, with design of experiments and statistical thinking as a regular practice.
  • Genuine interest in hands-on work involving equipment operation and trials.
  • Clear communication, strong documentation and organization, and good judgment about when to decide and when to ask.
  • Ability to walk or stand for prolonged periods and to bend, stoop, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability and willingness to wear respiratory and/or hearing protection as required.
Responsibilities
  • Scale Numat’s proprietary metal-organic framework deposition processes from bench and pilot trials through defined, repeatable processes suitable for commercial production.
  • Select, specify, and configure application hardware, fluid delivery, and drying and curing profiles.
  • Establish how material properties and process settings drive the product’s critical quality attributes.
  • Define and maintain process windows, specifications, and control strategies that keep output consistent.
  • Own the product as an integrated process by defining how nonwoven, metal-organic framework deposition, and lamination operations interact, what each requires from the preceding operation, and how variation propagates through the finished fabric.
  • Run pilot trials on site and support vendor and toll production trials.
  • Own web handling and its interaction with the metal-organic framework deposition step, including unwind and rewind tension, web path, line speed, drying profile, and edge and defect control.
  • Diagnose and eliminate defects and sources of variation.
  • Support and develop pilot nonwoven and lamination processes alongside metal-organic framework deposition work.
  • Partner with maintenance and equipment vendors on commissioning, qualification, and preventive maintenance as new pilot lines come in-house.
  • Plan, design, and execute experiments and design of experiments that map the process space and reduce product and process variability.
  • Analyze data, turn it into clear conclusions and decisions, and assess process capability against product specifications.
  • Handle raw-material and substrate variation by setting incoming material requirements and building process latitude to absorb variation.
  • Build technology transfer packages and lead trials at external converting and contract manufacturing partners through qualification.
  • Support basic design and front-end engineering design for installing unit operations together into a production line, including process flow, equipment sizing and specification, layout, material flow, and utilities.
  • Work with equipment vendors through specification, acceptance testing, and commissioning.
  • Partner with Research to establish what is processable at scale and feed process constraints back into development early.
  • Work with the quality lab and metrology program to define measurements, methods, and acceptance criteria that gate the process.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience across more than one surface application or deposition method, with judgment about which method suits a given material and format.
  • Nonwoven forming, including spunbond or meltblown, or lamination process experience, or familiarity with the variability that nonwoven substrates bring to a deposition process.
  • Working knowledge of polymer mechanical behavior, textile mechanics, and laminate mechanical characterization, including tensile and elongation, modulus, bending and shear stiffness, drape, and peel or adhesion, with the ability to select appropriate test methods and relate layer properties and lamination conditions to finished-fabric performance.
  • Basic design or front-end engineering design work for a production line or unit operation, including process flow, equipment sizing and specification, layout, utilities, defining vendor scope, and bringing separate unit operations together into one line.
  • Experience scaling a process from pilot to commercial volume, including technology transfer to contract manufacturers or toll processors.
  • Experience specifying, commissioning, or starting up new process equipment.
  • Familiarity with design of experiments and data-analysis tools such as Minitab, JMP, or Python.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to external production and testing partners.

About the company

NuMat Technologies designs nanoporous materials, mainly using compounds with many tiny pores, to improve gas storage, separation, and encapsulation. These materials work by having a network of small holes that can trap and hold gases or chemicals, enabling selective separation of gas mixtures and safer containment. What sets NuMat apart is the combination of deep chemistry and engineering expertise with strategic business leadership, plus high-profile collaborations such as the partnership with Linde that validate and scale their technology for industrial use. Their goal is to tackle long-term, generational challenges by making industrial gas storage and separation more efficient and sustainable, paving the way for broader, real-world adoption.

What believers are saying

  • July 2026 APFIT awarded Numat $23.67 million for Special Operations CB suits.
  • August 2026 Nitto partnered with Numat on next-generation decarbonization technology.
  • July 2026 Meta AI joined Numat to speed predictive MOF discovery for direct-air capture.

What critics are saying

  • Defense revenue hinges on APFIT fielding; delays push 2026-2027 orders out.
  • Semiconductor growth depends on Merck distribution and concentrated Tier 1 fab adoption.
  • If MOFs commoditize, Numat loses pricing power and its manufacturing moat collapses.

What makes Numat unique

  • Numat runs the world’s first industrial-scale MOF manufacturing campus in Chicago.
  • ION-X is the first commercial MOF product, distributed globally with Merck.
  • Numat spans defense, semiconductor, and decarbonization markets with validated MOF materials.
