Requirements
  • You have led a data or engineering team before; this is not a first-time-manager seat.
  • You are comfortable running one-on-ones, writing performance reviews, navigating team dynamics, and developing people.
  • You have stayed technical while leading and continue to write or review code.
  • You have hands-on experience designing and building data pipelines, warehouses or lakehouses, and analytical infrastructure at scale.
  • You have strong Python skills and strong SQL skills, including querying, views, and reusable data models built from messy sources.
  • You have production experience with Databricks or a directly comparable Spark-based lakehouse and a data-cataloging or governance layer such as Unity Catalog.
  • You have experience building ETL or ELT pipelines and running them on orchestrators such as Databricks Workflows and Airflow or close equivalents.
  • You are proficient with dbt for data modeling and transformation, including modular, tested, version-controlled models.
  • You have hands-on experience with AWS as a cloud environment.
  • You have experience implementing CI/CD for data pipelines and infrastructure, including automated testing, deployment, and version control for data workflows.
  • You have a working grasp of data governance, access controls, and compliance frameworks for regulated data, including PII and SOC 2.
  • You can move from writing a technical specification to presenting a strategic recommendation in the same week.
  • You understand how a business creates value over time and use data to sharpen that understanding.
  • You can explain to a CEO what you built, why it matters strategically, and what it will unlock.
  • You communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Experience in a regulated industry such as financial services, insurance, or healthcare is a strong asset.
  • You have operated in smaller, faster-moving environments where resourcefulness, speed, and judgment matter as much as technical rigor.
  • You can set direction without heavy process scaffolding.
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity and know when to escalate versus decide.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop the data engineering team with clear direction, regular one-on-ones, candid performance feedback, and growth opportunities.
  • Grow the team deliberately and hire for leverage while investing in tooling and automation so output scales faster than headcount.
  • Set technical standards through code review, design review, and pairing.
  • Build extensive documentation and create ways for the rest of the organization to discover what is built and why.
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable, reliable pipelines on Databricks through a medallion architecture into well-modeled gold-layer tables.
  • Write and review production Python and SQL, turn messy source data into reusable documented data models, and debug across the stack.
  • Own orchestration and reliability across Databricks Workflows and Airflow, including performance, cost, observability, and uptime.
  • Drive the roadmap for self-serve analytics, embedded client-facing data products, and machine learning and artificial intelligence enablement.
  • Close documentation and governance gaps involving column-level definitions, business semantics, table lineage, and freshness and quality signals.
  • Own the data roadmap and align it with company strategy and measurable business outcomes.
  • Translate business questions into data work and explain to the chief technology officer and executive team what was built, why it matters, and what it unlocks.
  • Surface data opportunities that inform commercial decisions, product direction, and client experience.
  • Establish and enforce data governance, access controls, anonymization, differential privacy where warranted, and lineage using Unity Catalog.
  • Build practices that support SOC 2 Type 2, PIPEDA, member PII protection, and applicable insurance regulations.
Desired Qualifications
  • A background in statistics and experience with R.
  • Familiarity with machine learning workflows, AutoML, and notebook environments such as Databricks or Jupyter.
  • Experience making data self-serve and accessible to non-technical teams through semantic modeling, natural-language query, and Databricks-native dashboards.
  • Experience with Databricks Genie.
  • Experience with Power BI or Tableau.
  • Experience integrating third-party services through APIs, including OCR or Textract-type ingestion.
  • Experience with mission-critical or real-money systems and multidimensional data.
  • New thinking that challenges industry conventions when appropriate.
