Requirements

  • The candidate must occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Assist physicians with office procedures for biopsies, surgeries, and treatments for various skin conditions.
  • Document and scribe office visits for clinicians in the electronic medical record.
  • Provide patient education and post-operative care instructions.
  • Work as part of a team within the practice and collaborate with clinicians and ambulatory support staff.
  • Provide direct and indirect care to a specified group of patients in a dermatology healthcare setting.
  • Provide cross coverage when needed, including coverage at multiple practice locations for clinician vacations, sick calls, and paid time off.
  • Ensure all necessary information and materials are present for clinicians before patient visits.
  • Receive and communicate information using computers, the intranet, email, fax, and patient medical records while following HIPAA rules and regulations.
  • Ensure equipment is functioning properly and supplies are available at the beginning of the day.
  • Request and manage office supplies and inventory while supporting cost containment.
  • Obtain and electronically record accurate histories of present illness and update patient problem lists, allergies, pharmacies, medication lists, and skin cancer histories as indicated.
  • Instruct and teach patients about aftercare for surgical and cosmetic procedures, confirm understanding, and document it in the patient chart.
  • Assist with daily and monthly OSHA checks and maintain the OSHA log.
  • Complete suture inventory checks and inspect rooms for expiring inventory.
  • Escort patients to appropriate rooms and accurately obtain and record histories and chief complaints according to practice standards.
  • Prepare patients for appointments based on diagnoses, procedures, and practice protocols, including gowns and procedure setups.
  • Perform pre-visit procedures under clinician direction, including suture removal and dressing removal.
  • Learn and perform ancillary services as needed, including phototherapy, Xtrac, and photodynamic therapy.
  • Assist clinicians in educating patients about biologic injection protocols.
  • Sterilize and package instruments.
  • Observe and report abnormal symptoms or behavior to the appropriate clinician.
  • Organize and prioritize daily work to keep clinician schedules running smoothly and meet patient needs.
  • Use standard precautions during room preparation and while assisting with procedures and examinations.
  • Collect and label specimens and ensure specimens are placed in the appropriate container according to practice protocol.
  • Record and maintain pathology logbooks to ensure pathology reports are documented.
  • Provide and review appropriate patient instructions for procedures or testing.
  • Maintain confidentiality and acknowledge patient rights when interacting with patients, families, and healthcare workers.
  • Perform suture removals and other procedures as directed by clinicians.
  • Prepare and administer appropriate medication dosing and mixing, including buffered lidocaine, Kenalog, sclerotherapy preparations, and Botox for cosmetic and hyperhidrosis treatments.
  • Perform subcutaneous and intramuscular medication injections after demonstrating competency and obtaining a supervisory agreement.
  • Seek clinician advice for treatment adjustments or complications.
  • Use team leaders or managers as resources.
  • Prepare patients for ancillary treatments based on referring clinician orders and set up procedures, including obtaining consents, calibrating machines, and preparing treatment areas.
  • Perform ancillary treatments according to clinician protocols and provide pre- and post-care instructions.
  • Escort patients to treatment rooms and inquire about responses to previous treatments according to practice standards.
  • Follow safety practices for ancillary services established by protocol.
  • Maintain accurate electronic medical record documentation and billing for services provided.
  • Route clinical documentation to referring clinicians for final review and signature.
  • Complete assigned required training by its deadlines, including Code of Conduct, Privacy and Data Security, and OSHA training.
