ABOUT RETOOL
Nearly every company in the world runs on custom software: Gartner estimates that up to 50% of all code is written for internal use. This is the operational software for refunding orders, underwriting loans, onboarding employees, analyzing transactions, and providing customer support. But most companies don’t have adequate resources to properly invest in these tools, leading to a lot of old and clunky internal software or, even worse, users still stuck in manual and spreadsheet flows.
At Retool, we’re on a mission to bring good software to everyone. We’re building a new type of development platform that combines the benefits of traditional software development with a drag-and-drop UI editor and AI, making it dramatically faster to build internal tools. We believe that the future of software development lies in abstracting away the tedious and repetitive tasks developers waste time on, while creating reusable components that act as a force multiplier for future developers and projects. The result is not just productivity, but good software by default. And that’s a mission worth striving for.
Today, our customers span from small startups building their first operational tools to Fortune 500 companies building mission-critical apps for thousands of users across their business. Interested in joining us? Let us know!
WHY WE’RE LOOKING FOR YOU
At Retool, we’re changing the way software is built. Our platform is the fastest way to build internal tools, saving companies time, resources, and engineering bandwidth. Since beginning as a frontend/view builder, we’ve expanded our offerings with products that help developers manage their controller and model layers—Workflows and RetoolDB, respectively. Retool’s multi-product surface area enables our users to build full-stack apps entirely within Retool or use our products on a standalone basis to address more bespoke needs.
Data is the fuel that powers Retool apps and workflows, and our Core Data team is central to making this data accessible, seamless, and powerful for our users. Your team’s primary responsibility will be to ensure that this “data fuel” is readily available and scalable to support new use cases built on Retool. As we expand, we’re looking for a Core Data Engineering Manager who combines technical expertise with a product-driven mindset, deftly balancing day-to-day execution with longer-term thinking to lead this team in supporting Retool’s rapidly growing ecosystem. This role is crucial for building resilient backend infrastructure, driving feature development, and deepening integration with the platforms that power Retool, ensuring our products continue to serve our users without limitations.
At Retool, we like to emphasize the word "leader" — the right leader is expected to take ownership, get decisions made, keep our energy and tempo up, and continuously improve the environment for our engineers.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
As the Core Data Engineering Manager, you’ll lead a team dedicated to enabling data connectivity and usage across Retool. You’ll play a key role in making sure our users can effortlessly connect, manage, and utilize data from a wide array of sources to build powerful internal tools. This means that every Retool customer is a Core Data customer. You’ll tackle questions like:
- How do we empower our users to leverage critical data sources, making data integration not just functional, but transformative?
- How do we make it possible to connect any type of data source, such that lack of ability to connect existing data doesn’t block new use-cases or customers?
- How can we enable users to manage data more abstractly, possibly by creating a unified data model across diverse sources?
At Retool, we like to emphasize the word "leader" — the right leader is expected to take ownership, drive outcomes, inspire high standards, and continuously improve the environment for our engineers. If you’re passionate about data, eager to take on new challenges, and ready to make an impact, we’d love to hear from you!
THE SKILLSET YOU’LL BRING:
- 5+ years of experience leading and scaling successful engineering teams.
- Deep technical understanding—while coding isn’t expected, you should be able to navigate our codebase and engage meaningfully in design and architecture discussions.
- A bias toward impactful goals, with a history of setting strategic direction that aligns with engineering objectives. You operate as a business owner, showing unwavering care for our customers, product, and team.
- Strong decision-making skills, balancing speed and quality, and collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Product-oriented approach to engineering, centered on understanding user needs and prioritizing impactful solutions. You support the team through macro process changes with a clear focus on outcomes.
- Thoughtfulness around engineering culture, process, and identity—proficient in navigating ambiguity, managing stakeholders, structuring communication, and driving accountability and excellence.
- Deep empathy for Retool’s mission with a drive to build a product that fundamentally transforms how software is built in order to bring good software to everyone.
