Requirements
  • Must have the ability to react calmly and make sound judgments within the scope of duties when caring for ill patients or residents and during emergencies.

  • Must maintain accountability for all actions taken and accept delegation from a supervising licensed nurse.
  • Must complete Basic Life Support training.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must complete clinical competency within three months of hire and every three years.
  • Must hold a Certified Nursing Assistant certificate from an accredited program.
  • Must hold a current full, unrestricted Certified Nursing Assistant license in Alaska.
  • Must obtain current Basic Life Support certification within three months of hire and before completing clinical orientation, and renew it biennially.
  • Must take and pass courses specific to unit needs, including point-of-care or waived testing when applicable.
  • Must follow instructions and demonstrate the relevant scope of practice while maintaining a safe environment with appropriate infection-control measures.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of correct equipment use and of normal and abnormal patient or resident findings identified in the plan of care with a nurse's agreement.
  • Must accurately transcribe and retrieve nursing data and verbally communicate findings to the healthcare team.
  • Must maintain a clean work environment using proper infection-control measures, including equipment cleaning.
  • Must provide general nursing care with minimal direction under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Must establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and healthcare team members.
  • Must maintain patient-information confidentiality.
  • Must use patient, resident, visitor, and peer management techniques to defuse volatile situations.
Responsibilities
  • Provide basic nursing care to non-acute and acutely ill patients and residents in acute-care and long-term-care settings while maintaining a safe and clean environment.
  • Obtain nursing data through interviewing and observing patients and residents under a licensed nurse's direction and review.
  • Document observation findings consistent with other providers under a licensed nurse's supervision.
  • Provide general nursing care to adult and geriatric patients and residents, including bed baths, oral hygiene, grooming, back care, dressing, heat and cold appliances, anti-embolism stockings, and sequential compression devices.
  • Monitor and record temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and intake-output measurements.
  • Collect and transport specimens to the correct departments.
  • Distinguish normal from abnormal findings identified in the patient care plan or data-collection tools, and report and record abnormal findings as appropriate.
  • Report and, when appropriate, record changes in patients' or residents' conditions or behavior and unusual incidents.
  • Perform tasks and duties specific to the unit specialty.
  • Provide bedside care, including positioning, lifting, turning, assistance with bedpans, urinals or commodes, answering call lights, making rounds, and ambulating patients and residents.
  • Transport patients and residents to and from various departments as required.
  • Assist patients and residents with meals or feed them.
  • Handle and care for patients' and residents' belongings, including dentures, glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, and prosthetic devices.
  • Change bed linens, clean over-bed tables and bedside stands, straighten rooms, and provide other general care as needed.
  • Assist a licensed nurse in preparing patients and residents for medical evacuation transport, including making phone calls, copying papers and charts, and providing direct patient care.
  • Provide one-to-one care or sitting for patients and residents when required for safety.
  • Prepare nursing areas, patient and resident rooms, and beds for admissions, transfers, emergencies, and discharges.
  • Assist with cleaning utility rooms and equipment and preparing equipment for disinfection or sterilization.
  • Report out-of-order equipment and other problems to the nurse manager or charge nurse.
  • Handle clean and dirty linen appropriately and store supplies in service areas.
  • Distribute and order supplies daily to maintain adequate stock levels in assigned units.
  • Float to other hospital departments as needed at the discretion of the nurse manager, charge nurse, or staff licensed nurse.
  • Dispose of solid and infectious waste according to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Replenish supplies in patient and resident rooms and bathrooms.
  • Participate in in-service and educational programs as assigned.
  • Complete mandatory training and annual competencies, evaluation materials, certifications, and licensure maintenance.
  • Participate in patient and resident care conferences with nurse agreement when applicable.
  • Attend and participate in at least 75% of staff meetings.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of prior experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant is preferred.
