Responsibilities
  • Lead daily Quality Control operations across all shifts to ensure effective execution of inspection processes, quality standards, and site procedures.
  • Provide direct leadership, coaching, and support to multiple Quality Supervisors and On-the-Job Trainers.
  • Indirectly guide and influence Quality Inspectors to ensure consistent quality performance across the operation.
  • Partner with the Site Quality Manager to drive departmental performance, employee engagement, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain a visible presence across all four shifts to promote alignment, employee support, and consistent quality expectations.
  • Adjust the schedule to respond to off-shift quality issues, staffing needs, business demands, special events, or employee recognition activities.
  • Attend and participate in daily and recurring operational meetings, including the Daily MRB.
  • Support escalation management, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and resolution of quality-related issues.

Proto Labs's operating margin has been trending up over the last 12 months, leading to break even profits over the last five years. However, its large expense base and inefficient cost structure mean it still sports inadequate profitability for an industrials business. This result is surprising given its high gross margin as a starting point. Analyzing the trend in its profitability, Proto Labs's operating margin might have fluctuated slightly but has generally stayed the same over the last five years. This raises questions about the company's expense base because its revenue growth should have given it leverage on its fixed costs, resulting in better economies of scale and profitability. This quarter, Proto Labs generated an operating margin profit margin of 7.6%, up 3.9 percentage points year on year. Digital manufacturing provider Protolabs has begun offering Medical White (MED-WHT 10), a biocompatible photopolymer, through its on-demand production services. The resin runs on Axtra3D's Lumia X1, a Hi-Speed SLA system built around the company's Hybrid PhotoSynthesis (HPS) process, making it the fifth production-ready material in Protolabs' Lumia X1 lineup. The launch comes as Protolabs operates three Lumia X1 units to serve orders spanning industrial and healthcare work. According to both firms, the arrangement goes further than a typical equipment sale: engineering teams on each side pinpoint promising applications together, choose candidate resins from Axtra3D's network of material suppliers, and then validate the full production workflow before anything reaches a customer. "The addition of Medical White reflects our continued commitment to providing customers with production-ready materials that solve real manufacturing challenges," said 3D Printing Director of Manufacturing Operations Kenny Capps.
