Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Certified Phlebotomist Technician certification is required.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, including the human circulatory system.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and infection control, including personal protective equipment, biohazard waste disposal, and prevention of bloodborne pathogen exposure.
  • Knowledge of specimen handling and processing, including requirements for handling, labeling, storing, and transporting blood and other fluid samples.
  • Knowledge of first-aid procedures for complications such as fainting, hematomas, or other adverse reactions during blood draws.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to perform venipuncture and capillary punctures precisely.
  • Communication and active listening skills to explain procedures, reassure patients, and gather accurate patient information.
  • Ability to interact with patients of different ages and conditions, including nervous patients, children, and elderly patients.
  • Attention to detail for patient identification, sample collection, and specimen labeling.
  • Organizational and time-management skills to manage tasks and prioritize patients.
  • Problem-solving ability to address difficult veins, malfunctioning tubes, and distressed patients.
  • Computer skills, including use of laboratory information systems for printing labels and entering patient data.
  • Ability to complete assignments accurately and under pressure.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Responsibilities
  • Perform patient phlebotomy using the prescribed technique in the phlebotomy procedure manual.
  • Process hematology and oncology patients as priority.
  • Work on pre-accession specimens and match and organize orders and labels for the day.
  • Follow the patient identification process.
  • Answer questions and resolve problems concerning test requisitions, specimen requirements, test additions, priority changes, and patient results.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels according to protocol and rotate previous stock.
  • Maintain required files and log systems in a neat and accurate manner.
  • Assist the supervisor in recording statistics and generate reports.
  • Process cancellations, credits, and additions of test procedures.
  • Pick up, unpack, date, and store items promptly according to manufacturers’ recommendations.
  • Check packing slips, verify quantities received, document receipt, and provide a copy to the supervisor or designee.
  • Remove empty boxes and recyclable materials and dispose of them according to standard operating procedures.
  • Prepare biohazard containers for use and disposal.
  • Verify patient identity using wristbands, verbal confirmation, and electronic records before drawing blood.
  • Explain blood draw procedures to patients to ensure comfort and cooperation.
  • Prepare phlebotomy equipment, including needles, tubes, tourniquets, gloves, and disinfectants.
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures on patients of all ages, including critical-care patients.
  • Label specimens accurately with patient details, date, and time.
  • Transport specimens promptly to the laboratory while maintaining temperature and safety protocols.
  • Enter collection data into hospital systems or laboratory software for tracking and reporting.
  • Prepare specimens for testing before delivery to technical staff.
  • Monitor patients after draws for reactions such as dizziness or fainting and provide assistance.
  • Follow infection-control protocols, including hand hygiene and personal protective equipment use.
  • Dispose of biohazard materials in compliance with hospital safety standards.
  • Restock phlebotomy carts and supply stations regularly.
  • Assist with difficult draws, including draws involving geriatric or combative patients.
  • Collaborate with nurses and laboratory staff to prioritize urgent collections and troubleshoot issues.
  • Document failed attempts and patient refusals in the medical record.
  • Participate in quality-control checks and audits to maintain compliance.
  • Train new phlebotomists or interns when assigned by supervisors.
  • Serve as a lead resource for Phlebotomist I staff by providing technical guidance and assistance with difficult or special collections.
  • Conduct random quality-assurance reviews to verify specimen-labeling accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with training and competency assessments for new employees, nursing staff, and students.
  • Participate in departmental performance-improvement projects and data-collection efforts.
  • Assist with inventory control and ensure supplies are available for multiple collection areas.
  • Serve as acting team leader or shift coordinator in the absence of a Phlebotomist III.
