Requirements
  • Two years of experience operating heavy equipment or vehicles, including equipment such as street sweepers, water trucks, asphaltic materials distributors, front-end loaders, graders or scrapers, bulldozers, backhoes, trenchers, tractors, tractor/semi-trailer combinations, or similar equipment.
  • Completion of a vocational or technical program from an accredited college or technical school in heavy equipment operations may substitute for six months of required experience.
  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of application, and a valid Arizona driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
  • Some positions may require a valid Arizona commercial driver's license, Class A, Class B, or Class C, with appropriate endorsements.
  • Candidates for positions requiring a commercial driver's license must meet applicable Arizona and federal physical requirements, rules, and regulations, including drug and alcohol testing.
  • Candidates must pass a post-offer, pre-employment background screening, including verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
  • Candidates must complete a post-offer physical examination and/or drug screen.
  • Candidates must have a clean driving record and be able to operate a motor vehicle safely and legally in accordance with applicable state and federal transportation laws.
Responsibilities
  • Operate a variety of equipment to rough construction specifications for public works construction and maintenance involving roads, parks, drainage ways, and wastewater systems.
  • Operate street sweepers, water trucks, asphaltic materials distributors, front-end loaders, graders, bulldozers, backhoes, boom trucks, tree spades, trenchers, tankers, semi tractors, belly dumps, scrapers, snow removal equipment, cranes, drag lines, rollers, striping equipment, pavement marking equipment, and other equipment.
  • Haul materials using semi tractors, trailers, and various trucks.
  • Load, secure, and transport equipment on transport trailers.
  • Blade-mix and lay bituminous road mix or asphaltic concrete.
  • Perform minor equipment repairs and servicing.
  • Participate in a variety of manual labor tasks.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with or knowledge of road maintenance on public works-related roadways.
  • Class B commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement.
  • Experience with or knowledge of traffic control procedures.
  • Experience with or knowledge of operating equipment in roadway maintenance.
