Requirements
  • Completion of high school education or vocational school education and a minimum of 1 year of combined educational and/or commercial experience in quantity cookery, including baking.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and perform basic arithmetic functions.
  • A current state-approved sanitation certificate is required.
  • Ability to tolerate water, cleaning chemicals, elevated noise, heat, and humidity associated with commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Adequate physical strength and coordination to prepare food, clean, and receive supplies while using standard food service utensils and equipment.
  • Ability to safely lift and move 50 pounds, work from a step stool, walk and stand for prolonged periods, bend, reach, pull, and push.
  • Ability to manipulate utensils and equipment repetitively for variable periods, up to 65% of an assigned shift.
  • Ability to move between work stations and other campus food service areas.
  • Good vision with or without correction and the sensory ability to taste and smell.
  • Ability to maintain good personal hygiene and wear clean uniforms in compliance with public health standards and college policy.
  • Ability to adhere to departmental sustainability initiatives.
  • Basic computer skills, including sending and receiving email.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with all food preparation and service during assigned shifts under the guidance of the chef or cook on duty and direction of the area manager.
  • Work cooperatively and safely with staff to ensure efficient operation of the dining unit in accordance with work rules and departmental policies.
  • Maintain a cordial and accommodating dining atmosphere for students and guests.
  • Clean and maintain dining service areas and equipment, including routine floor maintenance on each shift.
  • Assume dining room coordinator duties during key service periods and as needed, including use of the dining access system.
  • Assist cooks and perform Kitchen Assistant duties during their absences.
  • Prepare, cook, garnish, and present menu items according to dining service standards and recipes, including breakfast items, soups, entrees, meats, sauces, vegetables, salads, dressings, breads, desserts, meal alternatives, dietary accommodations, and display cooking.
  • Support proper sanitation and recycling procedures.
  • Assist with receiving by checking in products, inspecting, weighing or counting, and properly storing food and supplies.
  • Assist the chef with accurate inventory of storage areas.
  • Organize production records, transfers, and meal counts for data entry with kitchen staff.
  • Communicate accurately, professionally, and promptly with staff, managers, and students, including labeling and dating prepared foods.
  • Review department notices and use college email and computer access responsibly.
  • Attend departmental meetings and training workshops as requested.
  • Participate in preparation for and service of special events.
  • Complete required payroll and scheduling forms within deadlines.
  • Initiate teamwork, collaboration, and cooperation between co-workers.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A culinary arts degree or equivalent training.
