Requirements
  • Working knowledge of summer and winter maintenance operations and the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it relates to maintenance activities.
  • Working knowledge of maintenance and maintenance-related construction contracts and agreements.
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs.
  • Good verbal communication skills and effective written communication skills to prepare reports, recommendations, and rationale statements.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain neat, accurate records.
  • Investigative and analytical skills to research the background of claims, analyze technical data collected, evaluate the validity of different points of view, and maintain objectivity in claim assessments.
  • Ability to use word-processing, spreadsheet, database, electronic-mail, and critical-path scheduling applications.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and adjust work methods and priorities as conditions develop, particularly during winter maintenance activities.
  • Working knowledge of the environment and regulations to ensure personal and others’ duties are performed safely.
  • Highly developed safety awareness and perceptive ability.
  • Ability to recognize hazards inherent in routine and non-routine tasks and adjust work practices to avoid loss, injury, or accidents.
  • Ability to communicate safety instructions to coworkers.
  • Ability to think clearly and focus on safety while using tools and equipment, driving, or operating equipment.
  • High School Diploma.
  • Valid Ontario Class DZ Driver’s Licence, MTO Operator’s Permit, and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to wear job-appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme heat and cold and in conditions involving wetness, humidity, heights, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, insects, and occasional reptiles or rodents.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain contracted assets including roadways, medians, signs, guardrails, fences, bridges, tunnels, and vegetation according to contract standards and conditions.
  • Perform shift-supervisor duties during the winter maintenance season.
  • Assist with or complete the daily and weekly organization and planning of work as directed.
  • Organize work activities by arranging appropriate equipment, materials, and labor.
  • Oversee work operations to ensure value for money and compliance with recognized safety requirements, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide leadership and safety training to junior Webber staff, including instructions on techniques, methods, and procedures.
  • Inspect contract staff work for compliance with standards and contractual agreements, advise contractors of deficiencies, and report performance to the supervisor.
  • Advise the supervisor on work performance, training, planning, and traffic control at work sites.
  • Complete, review, and maintain records covering equipment operation and maintenance hours, hours of work, material usage, daily inspections, equipment timesheets, expenses, sand and salt usage, vehicle accidents, and personal injuries.
  • Assist in preparing and monitoring weekly, monthly, and annual work plans.
  • Provide information for analysis of contractor or public claims.
  • Liaise with property owners, the public, police, municipal and Ontario government organizations, ministries, and utility companies to exchange information, maintain public relations, and support compliance.
  • Operate patrol equipment when necessary for efficient patrol operations.
  • Perform laboring tasks when necessary for efficient patrol operations.
  • Act for the supervisor during absences.
  • Compile and record highway and road inventory information, including entrances, bridges, road kilometers, and mowable hectares.
  • Investigate, report on, and when possible resolve complaints from the public and others.
  • Patrol assigned roads and report hazards and deficiencies.
  • Initiate contract-staff call-outs and administer hired-equipment tenders.
  • Respond on behalf of the Ministry and Webber during emergencies such as accidents, spills, inclement weather, or emergency-plan implementation.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements.
  • Carry out duties in line with company policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to a diverse, inclusive, and fair work environment free from discrimination, bullying, and harassment.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in construction, road maintenance, commercial or industrial repair, maintenance, or outdoor landscaping work.
