About the company

The American Red Cross provides emergency relief and humanitarian aid by mobilizing volunteers, donors, and staff to respond to disasters and everyday needs. Its main activities include collecting and supplying blood, running disaster response operations, offering life-saving training (such as CPR and first aid), supporting military families, and promoting preparedness in communities. The organization works by coordinating volunteers, managing blood banks and donation drives, deploying resources during emergencies, and teaching people essential emergency skills. What sets it apart from many other aid groups is its nationwide network and established infrastructure that combines disaster response, blood services, and preparedness programs under one umbrella, backed by a steady flow of donations and volunteers. The goal is to prevent and relieve human suffering by being ready to help at any time, at home and around the world.

Ballet West hosts blood drive featuring actor portraying Dracula.

Ballet West hosts blood drive featuring actor portraying Dracula. Posted: Oct 20, 2026 / 03:45 PM MDT Updated: Oct 20, 2026 / 05:22 PM MDT SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC4) - Ballet West teamed up with the American Red Cross for a blood drive on Oct. 20, and a blood sucking icon showed up to encourage Utahns to contribute to the greater good. Interact with Dracula while helping save lives. According to Ballet West, the performer who plays Dracula, Tyler Gum, was in full costume at the drive, which happened at the capitol theatre in Salt Lake City Tuesday afternoon. There, Dracula greeted donors from the community and cheered on those giving blood. After 16 years with Ballet West, Gum is retiring after the current run of Dracula is over, meaning that this may be one of the last chances to interact with him in character. The impact of donating blood. Aside from getting a chance to meet Dracula, a member of Ballet West personally experienced the lifesaving impact of blood donations also showed up: rehearsal director Pamela Robinson. Robinson, who has been with Ballet West for over 40 years, said that back in 2021, she received a devastating diagnosis of leukemia and was told she only had 2 and a half years to live. However, after receiving lifesaving blood marrow donations, Robinson beat expectations and recovered from the illness. To show support for the life changing impact of donating blood, Robinson joined donors during the blood drive at the Capitol Theatre. In a press release, Robinson spoke about the importance of donating blood, stating "I can speak as someone who has needed both red blood and platelets for 67 days while awaiting my 2nd bone marrow transplant. It means the world to those in need!" What if you can't make it? If you can't make it to the Capitol Theatre on Oct. 20 for the blood drive, you can still donate blood through the Red Cross. To find a blood donation center near you, visit this link. You can see Dracula live at the Capitol Theatre until Oct. 31. Tickets can be purchased here.

Hispanic Heritage potluck brings cultures, community together in Huntington.

Hispanic Heritage potluck brings cultures, community together in Huntington. Posted: Oct 10, 2026 / 06:45 PM EDT Updated: Oct 10, 2026 / 06:45 PM EDT HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WOWK) - Food and culture brought members of the Huntington area together Saturday as the American Red Cross hosted its third annual Hispanic Heritage potluck. The event was held at the American Red Cross on Kinetic Drive and was organized as a way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month while helping members of the area's Hispanic and Latino communities connect. Geraldine Santana, a Red Cross volunteer who helps the organization engage with the Hispanic community, said Hispanic Heritage Month provides an opportunity for people to share their cultures with others. Santana, who is from Venezuela, said one of the goals of the potluck was to showcase how similar foods can be prepared differently across Latin American cultures. She brought arroz con leche, a rice pudding, to add something sweet to the dishes being shared. Santana said events like the potluck are particularly meaningful because the Hispanic community in the Huntington area is relatively small. "We'll be able to share with other people from other countries because we live here together and sometimes we don't see each other. So I think this is an opportunity to meet and share our culture with other people also," Santana said. The event was held in partnership with Esperanza Church and also included a fire-safety presentation. Red Cross Community Disaster Program Manager Roy Grimmett said this is the third year for the event and organizers have continued making changes to the program. This year, Santana was scheduled to teach the fire-safety class in Spanish. Grimmett said last year's presentation was delivered in English with Santana translating. Grimmett said the Red Cross has seen an increased need to connect Spanish-speaking residents with disaster preparedness information. He said the organization responds when people are displaced by house fires and other disasters while also working to prevent emergencies through programs such as its Home Fire Campaign. Through that program, Grimmett said the Red Cross can install smoke alarms in homes at no cost to families. Santana said she hopes the Hispanic Heritage event continues next year and reaches even more members of the community.
