Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • August 4, 2026 revenue hit $11.5 billion; data center revenue rose 107%.
  • September 8, 2026 AMD raised 2030 TAM to $2 trillion-$3 trillion.
  • Oracle's Q3 2026 50,000-GPU Helios supercluster validates AMD's rack-scale strategy.

What critics are saying

  • Broadcom is winning OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic custom-silicon budgets during 2026.
  • August 2026 China export controls still block MI308 sales and create recurring charges.
  • If Helios ramps slip beyond Q2 2027, Nvidia consolidates frontier AI share.

What makes AMD unique

  • July 2026 Helios links MI455X, Venice EPYC, and Vulcano into rack-scale systems.
  • AMD and Meta co-developed Open Rack Wide, reducing deployment friction for hyperscalers.
  • ROCm plus EPYC gives AMD CPU-GPU software-stack leverage across AI and HPC.

AMD could compound EPS at 65% through 2030 on agentic AI demand, Piper says

Piper Sandler has initiated coverage on Advanced Micro Devices with an Overweight rating and a $600 price target. Analyst David O'Connor estimates revenue will grow at a 50% compound annual growth rate from fiscal year 2026 to 2030, with earnings per share compounding at 65%. The bullish outlook stems from increasing demand for server CPUs driven by Agentic AI workloads. AMD reported second-quarter revenue of $11.5 billion, beating estimates, with data centre revenue of $6.7 billion, up 107% year-over-year. The firm is expanding beyond semiconductors into rack-scale systems and software. It's ramping up GPU production with clients including OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic. Hedge fund interest increased significantly, with 164 funds holding stakes in the second quarter, up from 134 previously.

Trump rejects AI slowdown calls, boosting Nvidia and AMD's frontier development prospects

President Donald Trump rejected calls to slow frontier AI development on 13 September, arguing the US must preserve its lead over China. The stance directly affects Nvidia and AMD, both of which sell computing systems whose demand could shift if AI labs deliberately stretch out model-development cycles. On 14 September, Nvidia fell 3% and AMD slid 4.4% after industry leaders pushed for a slowdown due to safety fears. Trump instead said "whoever wins AI, wins." Nvidia reported second-quarter Data Centre revenue of $89.0 billion, up 117% year over year. AMD's Data Centre revenue reached $6.7 billion, up 107%. Trump's position reduces the odds of a White House push for slower development and changes incentives facing labs considering self-imposed pacing.

AMD raises 2030 addressable market forecast to $3T, shares jump 9%

Advanced Micro Devices raised its total addressable market forecast to $2 trillion–$3 trillion by 2030, up from a previous $2 trillion estimate. CFO Jean Hu announced the revision at Citi's 2026 Global TMT Conference on 8 September. Shares jumped approximately 6% following the announcement and continued climbing, reaching near $521, though still about 11% below the stock's 52-week high of $584.73. The forecast encompasses chip demand across data centres, PCs, and embedded products. AMD's data centre segment, which sells GPUs and server processors for AI applications, more than doubled year-over-year revenue to $6.7 billion in the second quarter. CEO Lisa Su expects the data centre segment to double revenue again in 2027. The company's market value currently sits near $870 billion, with a forward price-to-earnings ratio of approximately 33.

TSM's record $16.7B August sales spotlight AI chip boom as foundry costs threaten Nvidia and AMD margins

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company reported record August revenue of NT$514.81 billion, up 53.3% year-on-year, signalling robust demand for AI chips. However, concerns about potential 10% price increases next year pressured semiconductor stocks. The development creates challenges for Nvidia and AMD, both competing for AI accelerator market share whilst relying on TSM's manufacturing capabilities. Nvidia's advantage lies in its CUDA platform and ecosystem, though rising foundry and packaging costs threaten its historically high margins. AMD faces similar cost pressures but may struggle more to pass increases to customers as it seeks to gain market share. Hedge fund ownership increased for both companies in Q2, with Nvidia held by 285 funds and AMD by 164.

Intel and AMD break out on server CPU shortage as AI workload shift drives pricing power

Intel and Advanced Micro Devices cleared multi-month resistance this week, whilst Nvidia gained just 2.12% and Broadcom fell, signalling rotation within the AI chip trade. Intel closed Wednesday at $106.24 and AMD at $521.10. Both eased in Thursday pre-market trading but remain below their 2026 highs. The rally stems from shifting AI workload demands. Whilst training relied on GPUs, agentic systems require CPUs to coordinate tasks. Analysts now model the GPU-to-CPU ratio falling from roughly eight-to-one towards parity. AMD projects a $120 billion server CPU market by 2030, against a base near $30 billion. Supply constraints confirm demand. Intel backlogs extend beyond six months, and EPYC processors are sold out for 2026. Server CPU prices have climbed 10% to 35% quarterly.
