Requirements
  • A PhD in Philosophy is required by the time of appointment.
  • The area of specialization must be Social and Political Philosophy.
  • ABD candidates may apply, but must complete the degree by the contract start date in August 2027; otherwise, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that the degree will be completed before January 2027.
  • Candidates must be able to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Candidates must be willing and able to actively follow applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills.
Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate Philosophy courses and the World of Ideas capstone course in the General Education program.
  • Deliver 24 credits of instruction per academic year.
  • Maintain at least five student office hours each week during the academic year.
  • Use Navigate for all advising and mentoring notes.
  • Respond professionally and in a timely manner to student, colleague, and administrator inquiries through Navigate, Canvas, email, and telephone, generally within 24–48 business hours while under contract.
  • Submit course syllabi punctually at the start of each term and ensure they meet university and system-wide requirements.
  • Contribute to curriculum development.
  • Select and develop instructional materials that comply with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Maintain an active scholarly agenda contributing to Philosophy.
  • Disseminate research through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, or professional exhibitions in accordance with department and college standards.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university meetings and committee work.
  • Participate in professional and public service.
  • Contribute to program assessment and development.
  • Engage in professional outreach and service aligned with the University Mission Statement and the Wisconsin Idea.
  • Participate in at least one graduation ceremony each academic year.
  • Teach at least one course in the History of Philosophy and other Philosophy courses aligned with the candidate’s specialization and competence.
  • Contribute to the Liberal Studies program and advise Liberal Studies majors.
Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching.
  • Experience with Canvas.
  • A record of scholarly achievement.
  • An area of competence that contributes to the college’s interdisciplinary programs in Women’s and Gender Studies and/or Race and Ethnic Studies.
