Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED program.
  • One year of work-related experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, and the general public.
  • Must obtain First Aid and CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Must obtain certification required by applicable standards for the assigned facility or department within six months of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must complete mandatory pre-employment drug testing and may be subject to random, unannounced drug and alcohol testing during employment.
  • Must be able to work changing shifts, mandatory overtime, double shifts, and holdover or callback assignments in a 24-hour facility.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age for applicable positions and pass all portions of the Juvenile Academy or applicable PREA and Ethics standards.
  • Must be physically able to work with youths who may have committed dangerous or aggressive acts, including takedowns, chasing, and restraint techniques.
  • Must be able to work in a secured facility with potential exposure to hepatitis, tuberculosis, lice, and other diseases.
  • Must be able to use a vehicle to transport youths when required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct supervision to youths in a 24-hour detention facility to ensure their health, safety, and welfare in compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and applicable standards.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to youths to promote personal awareness of responsibilities and alternatives.
  • Make sound judgments and decisions during crises or potentially dangerous situations in the absence of a supervisor, inform the supervisor of problems and actions taken, and document those actions.
  • Enforce facility rules, discipline youths, document behavior and other relevant information, and forward documentation to appropriate personnel.
  • Serve as backup to staff and perform duties including administering medications, transporting youths to appointments, processing intake assessments or discharges, and disciplining youths.
  • Conduct inspections, rounds, and drills, including room checks and physical searches of youths.
  • Transport youths to and from appointments.
  • Coordinate and provide daily educational and entertainment program activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
