About the company

Movado Group designs and distributes watches for a portfolio of owned and licensed brands. Its products are timepieces created for a range of brands it owns or licenses, with its Museum Watch design (a black dial with a single gold dot at 12) as a hallmark that reflects its design language. The company operates by designing watches and selling them through its brand network and distribution channels, including licensing agreements that extend its reach. Movado’s differentiation comes from its long heritage dating to 1881, the iconic Museum Watch design recognized for its minimalist dial and the MoMA permanent collection, and its strategy of managing a diverse mix of owned and licensed brands rather than relying on a single line. Its goal is to grow a global watch company by leveraging this iconic design heritage and a diversified brand portfolio to reach customers worldwide with high-quality timepieces.

F.P. Journe and Chanel acquire 95% of EBEL from Movado Group.

F.P. Journe and Chanel acquire 95% of EBEL from Movado Group. A 95% stake in Swiss brand Ebel changes hands for USD 66.5 million, moving to a consortium led by Montres Journe SA. In a recent announcement by the Movado Group, Ebel is set to be acquired by a strategic buyer group led by Montres Journe SA, with the participation of Chanel (partial owner of F.P. Journe) and industry veteran and ex-CEO of De Bethune, Pierre Jacques. The latter will serve as Chief Executive Officer of Ebel. The Group of investors have entered into an agreement with the American Movado Group. The transaction is subject to customary adjustments, and a 95% interest in Ebel will be acquired for USD 66.5 million - the Movado Group will retain a 5% stake in the brand. An important name in Swiss watchmaking, Ebel was founded in 1911 in La Chaux-de-Fonds - the company was named after the initials of the founder and his wife, Eugene Blum Et Alice Levy. The brand was remarkably successful in the 1970s and 1980s, in particular under the management of the charismatic Pierre Alain Blum. With its chic quartz watches, the company was still thriving while the quartz crisis hit the industry. Ebel was also manufacturing Cartier watches under licence since the 1970s. But because of unfortunate investments in other industries, Pierre-Alain Blum was forced to sell Ebel to Investcorp in 1994, which in turn sold it to LVMH in 1999. In 2003, the Movado group bought Ebel from the French luxury powerhouse. Two decades later, the brand changes hands again. The news represents an opportunity for the American Movado Group to divest from a brand whose activity appears relatively disconnected from its core activities, the American group being mostly active in an entry-level field, which next to Movado, produces watches under license for multiple fashion brands (Hugo Boss, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger...) The group of investors led by François-Paul Journe hopes to restore this important Swiss name to its former prominence. A strategic shift can therefore be expected, particularly given the different cultural backgrounds and expertise of the parties involved: F.P. Journe and Pierre Jacques bring a strong heritage in high-end, independent watchmaking, while the Movado Group has traditionally focused on accessibility. The transaction includes trademarks, other intellectual property, inventory and certain other assets primarily dedicated to the Ebel business, including the Villa Turque, a superb modernist house built by famed architect Le Corbusier in La Chaux-de-Fonds. If the share of the different investors is not disclosed, for Chanel, it is also a way to expand its watchmaking investment portfolio already comprising ownership or a stake in companies such as G&F Chatelain (watch production), Bell & Ross, Romain Gauthier, F.P. Journe, Kenissi, MB&F or Kross Manufacture.

October 8, 2026 at 6:46 a.m. PARAMUS, N.J. - Movado Group, Inc. (NYSE: MOV) today announced that it has entered into a binding agreement to sell a 95% interest in its EBEL brand for $66.5 million to a strategic buyer group led by Montres Journe SA ("Montres Journe"), a Geneva-based luxury watch manufacturer, with the participation of Chanel ("Chanel"), the luxury house, and Pierre Jacques, a renowned figure in the Swiss watch industry, who will serve as Chief Executive Officer of EBEL. The transaction is subject to customary adjustments and closing conditions with Movado Group retaining a 5% interest in the business. Founded in Switzerland in 1911, EBEL is a premium luxury watch brand known for its distinctive design, craftsmanship and rich heritage. This strategic sale allows Movado Group to sharpen its focus on its core accessible luxury and fashion watch and jewelry portfolio, while providing EBEL with a new ownership platform specifically positioned to support the brand's long-term development. With the expertise and capital of Montres Journe and Chanel, and under the leadership of industry veteran Pierre Jacques, EBEL will have the resources and dedicated focus to pursue its next phase of growth. Efraim Grinberg, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, stated: "EBEL is a prestigious brand with a rich heritage, known for its carefully curated collections, and we are very pleased to have found partners that share our appreciation for the brand and have an exciting vision for its future. This transaction reflects the continued strategic discipline with which we are managing our portfolio and allocating our resources. It allows us to concentrate fully on executing our priorities across our watch and jewelry brands, while placing EBEL with owners who have the expertise, commitment and long-term perspective to unlock the full potential of this exceptional Swiss brand. We believe this is a compelling outcome for both Movado Group and EBEL. We look forward to supporting the buyer group through the transition period and participating in its future success as a minority owner." François-Paul Journe, Founder of F.P. Journe, commented: "Like Michelangelo and so many others after him: the product, the product, the product. EBEL has always stood for exceptional product, and I am delighted to contribute to its next chapter alongside my friends and partners." Frédéric Grangié, President of Chanel Watches & Fine Jewelry, added: "EBEL is one of the great names of Swiss watchmaking, with a rich heritage, a distinctive creative identity and a strong foundation for future growth. This investment reflects our confidence in the brand's long-term potential and our commitment to supporting its development while preserving the craftsmanship, excellence and values that have defined EBEL for generations. We look forward to accompanying the brand in this next phase of its history." Pierre Jacques, who will serve as Chief Executive Officer of EBEL following the transaction, said: "I am incredibly proud and excited to lead this new stage of EBEL alongside François-Paul Journe and Chanel, and to contribute to the future success of such an iconic Maison." In connection with the transaction, trademarks, other intellectual property, inventory and certain other assets primarily dedicated to the EBEL business, including the Villa Turque, a historic modernist house designed by famed architect Le Corbusier, will be transferred to a newly formed Swiss subsidiary of the Movado Group. Certain personnel within Movado Group dedicated to the EBEL business will become employees of the new Swiss subsidiary. At closing, which is expected to take place in the next few months, 95% of the equity interest in the new EBEL subsidiary will be transferred to the buyer group. Movado Group will also provide certain services to the EBEL entity pursuant to a transition services agreement following the closing to support an orderly transition and continuity for EBEL's customers and business partners.
