Requirements
  • Personal, first-hand experience as a recipient of the mental health system, including experiences such as psychiatric inpatient hospitalization, outpatient services or therapy, psychiatric medications, or community mental health groups.
  • Must become a Certified Peer Specialist or complete the Core Elements of Young Adult Peer Mentoring training within six months of hire, and must become a Certified Peer Specialist within one year of hire.
  • One year of experience working with youth and young adults.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver's license must be presented at employment; incumbents must be at least 21 years old, have maintained a valid United States driver's license for at least one year, and pass a driver's screening background check.
  • Must maintain a safe driving record and adequate vehicle insurance when using a personal vehicle.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, climb, lift at least 25 pounds, operate office equipment, assist clients with daily living tasks, and communicate with clients, staff, and external representatives.
  • Must complete CPR and First Aid requirements within two weeks of hire.
  • NET certification is required.
  • Certified Peer Specialist credential is required within 12 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of the Young Adult Peer Mentoring Practice Profile, the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health Child, Youth and Family services system, and Adult services systems.
  • Ability to assist young adults in service planning, use mediation and conflict-resolution skills, maintain confidentiality, use advocacy and crisis-intervention techniques, and make independent judgments.
  • Knowledge of person-centered, strengths-based, recovery-oriented values; peer-support practices and ethical standards; engagement and participatory planning techniques; community resources; and legal, civil, and human rights.
  • Ability to create supportive relationships, work independently and collaboratively, balance competing priorities, and use evidence-based and relapse-prevention approaches.
Responsibilities
  • Support youth and young adults in engaging with services, supports, and community activities while promoting self-determination and shared decision-making.
  • Provide non-directive peer support, coaching, modeling, and individual one-to-one mentoring to 5–10 young adults.
  • Provide core staffing for the Access Center, engage young adults during drop-in hours, and staff activities and events.
  • Welcome young adults, provide peer support, and orient them to available services.
  • Facilitate regular peer-support groups on topics relevant to young adults.
  • Assist with recruiting and supporting the Young Adult Leadership Council.
  • Plan events and training opportunities for staff, young adults, and the broader community based on identified needs.
  • Conduct outreach and marketing to educate young adults and community stakeholders about the program and services.
  • Attend community events to engage young adults and explain available benefits and supports.
  • Help young adults identify and access services and service providers, build supportive relationships and community connections, and develop self-sufficiency and positive employment behaviors.
  • Help young adults identify goals related to education, employment, family relationships, spirituality, and social recreation and integrate them into service planning.
  • Help young adults communicate and work effectively with service providers, employers, natural supports, family members, and others.
  • Help young adults develop life skills, self-advocacy, coping techniques, and self-help strategies.
  • Use Gathering and Inspiring Future Talent, Wellness Recovery Action Plan, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and other evidence-informed or best-practice models.
  • Use lived experience in a purposeful, strengths-based way to promote discovery, recovery, hope, and future focus.
  • Provide crisis intervention when needed.
  • Serve as a bridge between child- and adult-serving mental health systems on behalf of young adults.
  • Maximize young adults' choices, self-determination, participation, and decision-making in service planning, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Attend in-service training and staff meetings and collaborate with Access Center staff and other area centers.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • A bachelor's degree in a human services discipline is preferred.
