Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Reasonable proficiency with CADD platforms such as Bentley OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation Connect, Autodesk AutoCAD, and Civil 3D is required, especially for remote work.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, is required.
  • Working knowledge of the Minnesota Department of Transportation's AASHTOWARE system is required for entering daily work reports related to contractor-completed project work.
  • A valid driver's license is required, or the ability to obtain one.
  • The technician must be willing to interact with people and work in team environments.
  • The technician must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and possess communication and organizational skills.
  • The technician must be able to operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
  • The technician must be able to work in varied weather conditions and terrains associated with construction sites.
  • The technician may need to stand and walk for prolonged periods while performing construction observation, materials testing, and surveying.
  • The technician must work scheduled and required hours.
  • The technician must be able to lift and move objects or containers weighing up to 50 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Work as a key project team member on highway and urban roadway projects from design through construction.
  • Independently and collaboratively contribute to the design and development of project plans using CADD skills.
  • Serve as Chief Inspector on construction projects.
  • Perform materials testing and inspection involving concrete and asphalt operations during construction.
  • Support survey crews and train junior-level staff.
  • Prepare detailed dimensional drawings and design layouts from rough sketches, redline corrections, and topographic surveys using CADD software such as MicroStation GEOPAK, OpenRoads Designer, Autodesk AutoCAD, and Civil 3D.
  • Calculate dimensions, square footage, roadway and utility profiles, material quantities, and related measurements using computer programs and a calculator.
  • Follow company CADD standards and procedures and client CADD standards when required.
  • Follow direction and execute multiple tasks assigned by Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Senior Technicians in developing project plans and specifications.
  • Assist with and develop skills for construction observation and inspection, surveying, and materials testing.
  • Fulfill the role of resident project representative and/or owner's representative during construction projects.
  • Communicate with contractors and handle difficult and time-sensitive situations.
  • Communicate with Apex and state or county agency Project Managers and Project Engineers about construction progress and potential field issues.
  • Document construction progress and quantities in field diaries and enter data into automated computer record systems.
  • Attend company, project, and client meetings in person or via teleconference or remote video conference.
  • Follow the company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
  • Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal, and ethical manner with attention to detail.
  • Work independently and in a team environment.
  • Participate in training opportunities that develop communication, technical, and organizational skills.
  • Travel and stay overnight when required, and work overtime, particularly during the construction season.
Desired Qualifications
  • A two-year Associate degree in Engineering Technology or a technical degree in Drafting is highly desirable; applicable experience may be accepted.
  • Five to ten years of experience with basic civil engineering design and construction inspection principles is preferred.
  • Material testing experience with current Minnesota Department of Transportation technical certifications is desired, or the ability to attain these skills and certification training in a timely manner.
