About the company

OceanComm develops high-speed wireless underwater communication systems using acoustic-modem technology to move data through seawater. Its main product, an ultrasound-based modem, connects to existing Ethernet networks to enable tetherless control of underwater vehicles and real-time data, including video, from subsea environments. The company stands out by using patented signal-processing algorithms that achieve 100–1,000 times higher data rates in the underwater setting and by serving defense, offshore energy, and oceanographic research clients with ready-to-use networking capabilities. OceanComm’s goal is to help offshore operators reduce costs by providing real-time data access, video streaming, and remote control of subsea assets.

What believers are saying

  • OceanComm posted five R&D openings in August 2026, signaling active product expansion.
  • HigherGov shows a new April 2026 federal award, confirming continuing government demand.
  • LinkedIn and website updates in September 2026 show customer-facing momentum and live market visibility.

What critics are saying

  • Hydromea and Equinor demonstrated seabed-to-cloud wireless broadband in March 2026.
  • OceanComm still depends on federal SBIR and small Navy purchase orders, limiting revenue diversification.
  • If optical subsea networking wins defense and energy buyers, OceanComm's acoustic niche shrinks fast.

What makes OceanComm unique

  • OceanComm claims 400 kbps underwater links and 7 km range on custom models.
  • Singer and Riedl still anchor patented acoustic modem expertise from Illinois and Navy work.
  • Its Ethernet-compatible, software-defined modem differentiates against bespoke subsea integration projects.
