Disney cuts up to 200 Experiences jobs while parks profits climb.

Disney cuts up to 200 Experiences jobs while parks profits climb. October 29, 2026 Disney has laid off between 100 and 200 workers in its Experiences division, with most pink slips hitting the Imagineering campus in Glendale even as the unit posts rising profits. Deadline reported that the company confirmed the cuts in the division that runs theme parks, resorts, and cruise lines. The bulk of the jobs lost were at Imagineering in Glendale. A person familiar with the decision said the moves were mostly project-based. The division constantly reprioritizes and reschedules work across multiple projects, the person indicated. The timing lands on a profitable business. In its most recent earnings report, Experiences profit rose 20 percent to more than $3 billion on almost $10 billion in revenue. Global guests grew 4 percent. Attendance at domestic parks rose 3 percent. Average per capita ticket revenue at the theme parks climbed 5 percent. Disney still told workers the company must get smaller and automate more of the work. D'Amaro's layoff rounds keep stacking up. Josh D'Amaro has overseen repeated job cuts since he succeeded Bob Iger as CEO last March. The Experiences action is the latest in a string of reductions across the company. Last April, Disney cut about 1,000 positions. In July, several hundred more jobs disappeared, mostly at Pixar and National Geographic. In September, a couple hundred employees in tech and HR were let go. Before the involuntary cuts, the company ran a voluntary early retirement offer. Eligibility covered workers at or above director level who were 50 or older and had at least 10 years with the company. That kind of offer often comes before forced reductions. At the end of fiscal 2025, Disney employed 231,000 people. Of those, 172,000 worked in the United States and 59,000 worked elsewhere. Sixteen percent of the workforce was part-time. Another 8 percent was seasonal, largely tied to parks and resorts. Legal chief warned of a smaller shop and more machines. On September 18, Chief Legal and Global Affairs Officer Horacio Gutierrez sent an email to Legal and Global Affairs employees that framed what was coming. Deadline obtained the message. Gutierrez warned of hard choices about staffing investments. He said the group was becoming a much smaller organization. "a much smaller organization." He also described a transformation process that includes automating certain workflows by leveraging the latest technologies. "transformation process" that includes "automating certain workflows by leveraging the latest technologies." The memo did not soft-pedal the direction. Staffing would shrink. Technology would take on more of the load. Workers were put on notice that investment choices would not spare headcount. Profits up, headcount down at the parks machine. Experiences has been a profit engine for Disney. The same unit now shedding 100 to 200 jobs just reported double-digit profit growth and nearly $10 billion in revenue. Management still projects a quarter of global guest growth in the current fiscal fourth quarter, even with consumer softness in Asia. Walt Disney World has seen core attendance increases. Disneyland Paris posted strong growth after the World of Frozen opening. Those numbers did not stop the pink slips at Imagineering. Project-based scheduling and constant reprioritization became the stated reason for the cuts. Automation and a smaller organization were the stated future. More change is already queued elsewhere. Disney Entertainment Television is expected to face a major restructuring under new head Debra OConnell. The motion picture studio is expected to go through the same kind of overhaul. Workers absorb the "hard choices" Disney's leadership framed the reductions as workflow reality and transformation. The people who lost jobs at Imagineering and across Experiences absorb the cost of those choices. The company remains large by any measure, with more than 230,000 employees on the books at the end of the last fiscal year. Parks keep drawing guests. Ticket revenue per visitor is up. Profit at Experiences is up sharply. Yet the pattern under D'Amaro has been steady: April's thousand-job cut, July's hundreds at Pixar and National Geographic, September's tech and HR reductions, and now another 100 to 200 in the division that sells the Disney vacation. Gutierrez's September note made the corporate preference plain. Staffing investments face hard choices. The organization gets smaller. Workflows move to the latest technology. The workers who built the attractions, shows, and guest experiences are the ones left holding the notice. When a division clears more than $3 billion in profit and still hands out pink slips for "project-based" reasons, the message to the people who show up and do the work is clear enough. Disney faces patent infringement suit over Hulu, Disney+, ESPN video coding.

Disney faces patent infringement suit over Hulu, Disney+, ESPN video coding. Disney is accused of using coding technology it has no licensing for to run its streaming platforms. WILMINGTON, Del. (CN) - When you infringe upon a star, your streams lead to suits. A Delaware-based patent holder sued The Walt Disney Company and several of its subsidiaries on patent infringement claims, saying the mass media conglomerate's streaming empire relies on video coding technology it has no right to use. The lawsuit centers around four U.S. patents owned by Tagivan, all of which relate to technology allowing for the transcoding, decoding and encoding of data. These coding technologies allow for more efficient storage, transmission and processing of information. According to Tagivan, Disney engaged in negotiations for a patent licensing agreement beginning in 2024, as the media conglomerate sought use of a patent pool containing Tagivan's patents-in-suit. Licensing negotiations stalled and an agreement was never reached, Tagivan claims. Despite failure to strike a deal, Tagivan says Disney made unauthorized use of the patents, using them to enhance its streaming services without paying Tagivan a cent. "Disney relies on Tagivan's innovations to efficiently deliver high-quality video to users throughout the United States and the world," Tagivan says in its complaint, filed Tuesday. "While other companies have recognized the value of Tagivan's portfolio and taken licenses, Disney continues to use Tagivan's technology without a license, thereby obtaining an unfair competitive advantage and failing to compensate Tagivan." The streaming services that have unlawfully used Tagivan's patents include Disney+, Hulu, Hulu Live, ESPN Select and ESPN Unlimited, Tagivan says, claiming the purported infringement stretches as far back as six years ago. Furthermore, Tagivan calls the media giant's purported patent infringements intentional, accusing Disney and its subsidiaries of "encourag[ing] direct infringement, not mere passive ownership or receipt of revenue." "Each defendant engaged in its inducement with knowledge of the patents-in-suit, actual awareness of the patent allegations, or deliberate avoidance of confirming whether the technology was patented," Tagivan says in its complaint. "Each defendant intended the platform conduct to take place and intended its customers or affiliates to use the systems as alleged." "The subscriptions, applications, shared systems and technical services are built to make the accused streaming activity ongoing and repeatable," Tagivan adds. "The defendants selected the products, services, commercial pathways and technical arrangements that enable the accused streaming activity." Tagivan seeks actual and enhanced damages to be determined at trial. However, Tavigan isn't the only company claiming patent infringement by Disney. On Oct. 7, South Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute sued The Walt Disney Company in Delaware federal court, claiming the House of the Mouse infringed its video coding patents by failing to strike a licensing deal. And in February 2025, technology research and development company InterDigital sued Disney across several countries over unlicensed use of its patented video coding and streaming patents. These suits proved overwhelmingly successful for InterDigital, as the company has obtained several injunctions across the European Union and Brazil. In response, Disney filed an antitrust lawsuit against InterDigital in Delaware federal court in August 2025, accusing the company of monopolizing video streaming technology. That prompted the Justice Department to issue a statement in October 2025 urging the court to handle the case with caution; a Delaware federal judge paused proceedings in September 2026 following a request from InterDigital. Tagivan and The Walt Disney Corporation could not be reached for comment.
