About the Job

Requirements

  • This position requires access to export-controlled information, and employment is contingent upon the applicant being a U.S. person as defined by 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3).
  • A PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field is required; exceptional candidates with an MS will be considered.
  • At least 10 years of hands-on experience designing and building laser systems.
  • Deep expertise in at least two of the following: external cavity laser architectures; fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers; semiconductor laser design and physics.
  • Strong understanding of laser physics and cavity dynamics; noise processes including linewidth, phase noise, and relative intensity noise; and thermal effects and opto-mechanical stability.
  • Proven experience taking laser concepts from laboratory demonstration to robust prototype.
  • Comfort working hands-on in a laboratory, including optical benches, fiber splicing, and diagnostics.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and develop new laser platforms from concept through prototype and early productization.
  • Lead laser design across external cavity laser architectures, including free-space and fiber-based designs; fiber lasers and amplifiers; and semiconductor lasers, including distributed feedback, distributed Bragg reflector, Fabry–Pérot, and external cavity laser gain chips.
  • Define optical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical requirements for new laser systems.
  • Perform and guide optical design and modeling; cavity design, mode control, linewidth and noise optimization; and wavelength tuning, stabilization, and control.
  • Design and execute experiments to characterize linewidth, phase noise, relative intensity noise, side-mode suppression ratio, tuning range, power, efficiency, and environmental sensitivity to temperature, vibration, and aging.
  • Drive technology trade studies and select architectures based on performance, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Collaborate with photonics integration and packaging teams; electronics and control systems engineers; and reliability and manufacturing engineering.
  • Mentor senior and junior engineers and set technical direction and best practices.
  • Author technical documentation, invention disclosures, and peer-reviewed publications as appropriate.
  • Support transition of designs to production, including design for test and design for manufacturability.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with narrow-linewidth, low-noise, or widely tunable lasers.
  • Background in telecommunications, LIDAR, sensing or metrology, or quantum, atomic, or coherent optical systems.
  • Familiarity with photonic integrated circuit-based lasers or hybrid integration; control loops, frequency locking, and stabilization techniques; and reliability, lifetime testing, and environmental qualification.
  • A track record of patents or high-impact publications.

About the Company

Monarch Quantum

Designs and manufactures quantum photonic subsystems

Monarch Quantum designs and manufactures Quantum Light Engines, integrated photonic subsystems that replace large laser systems with compact, factory-aligned modules. These modules handle state preparation, cooling, trapping, manipulation, and coherent control to prepare and measure quantum states for computing, sensing, and communications. They operate with a vertically integrated model in San Diego, combining in-house systems engineering, hybrid optical packaging, robotic assembly, and AI-driven manufacturing to enable design-to-volume production under one roof, reducing size, complexity, and integration risk. The company differentiates itself by offering ready-to-integrate modular photonic subsystems for architectures such as trapped-ion, neutral-atom, and photonics-based platforms, targeting hardware developers, system integrators, and OEMs to streamline quantum hardware development and scaling.
