About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of experience in machine learning or artificial intelligence engineering, with deep expertise in large language models, natural language processing, or search.
  • A proven track record of building and shipping machine-learning-powered or generative-AI-integrated products.
  • Hands-on experience with retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, hybrid retrieval, or agentic workflows.
  • A strong background in scaling machine learning systems from prototype to production.
  • Expert-level knowledge of generative AI ecosystems, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, and open-source software, and fine-tuning or serving frameworks.
  • Deep technical skills across modeling, infrastructure, and orchestration, including LangChain, LlamaIndex, and vector databases.
  • The ability to set technical direction and inspire peers through thought leadership.
  • A Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience, is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build novel approaches for knowledge-grounded large language models, embeddings, and multimodal modeling.
  • Explore fine-tuning, post-training, and retrieval-augmented strategies to adapt foundation models to Atlassian's data.
  • Lead technical explorations that expand the frontier of applied generative modeling.
  • Drive proof-of-concept experimentation, from agentic workflows to generative-AI-powered assistants.
  • Translate research ideas into fast, working prototypes that demonstrate user value.
  • Define and implement evaluation methods, including groundedness, hallucination detection, and human-in-the-loop methods, to measure success.
  • Act as the technical anchor of a small tiger team, mentoring engineers and scientists.
  • Influence design and implementation across retrievers, rankers, orchestration, and serving infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with product and platform teams to transition prototypes into scalable systems.
  • Contribute to the roadmap for the Forge as a global hub for advanced generative-AI products and applied research.
  • Partner with peers across Rovo, Jira Search, Knowledge AI, and Platform to drive cross-team impact.
  • Champion responsible AI, groundedness, and data quality in innovations.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with multimodal models, knowledge graphs, or semantic embeddings.
  • Familiarity with evaluation metrics for search and generative AI, including NDCG, groundedness, and human preference modeling.
  • Contributions to open-source machine-learning frameworks or generative-AI research communities.
  • Interest in mentoring, fostering innovation, and shaping a new AI hub in Singapore.
