New Meltshop and Continuous Casters in Toranagallu Primetals Technologies has successfully started up a new melt shop and two continuous casters at JVML's facility in Toranagallu, Karnataka. The scope of supply included two 350-ton LD (BOF) converters, primary dedusting systems, two 350-ton ladle furnaces, secondary dedusting for the entire meltshop, and two 2-strand continuous casters, along with comprehensive Level 1 and Level 2 automation for the converters, ladle furnaces, and casters. New Benchmark for Steelmaking The first converter, commissioned in December 2024, achieved an exceptionally fast ramp-up, reaching more than 20 heats per day by the end of the commissioning month. It completed 220 heats in the first three weeks and over 400 heats within the first month of operation. The initial lining campaign reached more than 6,000 heats, setting a new benchmark in steelmaking. Primetals Technologies has received the final acceptance certificate (FAC) for the first converter, ladle furnace No. 1, and caster No. 1. The second converter, commissioned in August 2025, achieved an even faster ramp-up, reaching more than 20 heats per day by the sixth day after commissioning. Primetals Technologies has also received the FAC for the second converter, ladle furnace No. 2, and caster No. 2. First 350-ton Primary Dry Dedusting System in India This project marks Primetals Technologies' first installation in India of 350-ton converters equipped with an advanced primary dry dedusting system. The system includes a steam-type heat recovery system, a dry electrostatic precipitator (ESP), and low-consumption axial-type ID fans, helping to improve energy efficiency, reduce water consumption, and meet environmental regulations. A gas cleaning plant with a gas recovery system, which significantly increases energy recovery, completes the dedusting solution. For the LD converter (BOF) plants, Primetals Technologies supplied converter top lances, tilting drives, the Vaicon Stopper slag retention system, valve stands, and a material handling system. Vaicon Stopper minimizes slag carryover during tapping, allowing for shorter production cycles and improved steel quality. The vessel shell is equipped with top-cone water cooling and supported by the Vaicon Lamella suspension system inside an air-cooled trunnion ring, helping to extend equipment life. Advanced Automation Solution The automation scope includes the BOF Optimizer process optimization system, which improves hit rates for carbon content and steel temperature, reduces reblow rates, and increases efficiency. The tailor-made Lomas off-gas analysis system works with BOF Optimizer to enable automatic blow-end control and improve carbon hit rates. For the ladle furnaces, the fully automated Melt Expert electrode control system boosts productivity and reduces energy consumption. Casting a Wide Variety of Steel Grades The two continuous slab casters, each with two strands, produce slabs with widths ranging from 900 to 1,650 millimeters and thicknesses of 220 or 260 millimeters. They handle steel grades ranging from ultra-low-carbon to high-carbon, including deep-drawing, structural, peritectic, and HSLA grades, as well as microalloyed and low-alloy steels, strip grades, and high-silicon electrical steel. Technology features include LevCon mold-level stability, DynaFlex mold oscillation, MoldExpert breakout prevention, DynaPhase phase-transformation modeling, and the LiquiRob robotic system for safe operation. Two Pelletizing Plants in Paradeep JSW Steel has placed an order with Primetals Technologies for two 8 MTPA pelletizing plants at its Paradeep facility in Odisha. Primetals Technologies is responsible for complete plant design, engineering services, key process equipment, complete process automation, and advisory services for construction and implementation. The plant concept is based on a reliable, tried-and-tested 816 m^2 induration furnace, which will serve as the basis for a standardized pellet plant model for future capacity expansions at Paradeep and other JSW Steel production sites. Together, the two plants will deliver 16 MTPA of pellet production capacity, directly supporting JSW Steel's rapid capacity expansion program. MagIron completes study for large-scale US merchant pig iron production. MagIron LLC has completed a concept and economic study conducted by Primetals Technologies to assess the development of large-scale granulated pig iron production at its existing facilities in the United States. The study evaluated three production routes: MIDREX Flex direct reduction followed by electric smelting; MIDREX Flex direct reduction followed by electric arc furnace and ladle furnace processing; and conventional blast-furnace production. According to the study, all three routes provide technically viable pathways to producing approximately two million tonnes of granulated pig iron annually. MagIron said the project could establish a significant domestic source of high-quality iron units for US steelmakers and support efforts to strengthen the country's steel supply chain. The preliminary study estimates capital expenditure of approximately $1.6 billion to $2.3 billion for the main ironmaking and granulation facilities. Operating cash costs are estimated at approximately $305 to $345 per tonne of granulated pig iron, before by-product credits and excluding carbon costs, capital charges and certain corporate and financing expenses. Based on the study and its own financial analysis, MagIron estimates the project could generate annual EBITDA of between $400 million and $500 million across the commodity cycle. The company plans to make use of its existing mining, processing, pelletising and logistics infrastructure, which has an estimated replacement value of approximately $1.3 billion. MagIron said this infrastructure could reduce development costs and shorten construction timelines compared with a completely new project. The company controls an estimated 2.6 billion tonnes of iron ore resources, providing a long-term raw material base for future production and expansion. Julian Treger, Executive Chairman of MagIron, said the completion of the Primetals study confirms several potential routes for establishing domestic merchant pig iron production. He added that the company will continue advancing its pig iron strategy while retaining the option to supply direct-reduction-grade pellets when market conditions support such an opportunity. The company said the US currently imports essentially all of its merchant pig iron requirements, creating exposure to international supply chains. MagIron estimates that annual US merchant pig iron consumption has historically been between four million and six million tonnes. Its proposed two-million-tonne annual production capacity could therefore supply around one-third to one-half of current demand. MagIron said its location provides access to domestic steelmaking customers and logistics infrastructure. Domestic production could reduce transportation distances and exposure to maritime and port disruptions compared with imported material. The direct-reduction routes evaluated in the study would initially use natural gas and could allow greater use of hydrogen as competitive hydrogen supplies and infrastructure become available. MagIron will now work on selecting a preferred technology route and production site while engaging customers, technology providers, government agencies, financing partners and other stakeholders. The company is also progressing plans to restart its iron ore concentrator near Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and pelletising plant near Reynolds, Indiana. The facilities have received more than $660 million of prior investment and were previously designed to operate at an annualised rate of about 2.2 million tonnes of blast-furnace-grade concentrate.
Primetals to modernise Korean pickling line. Published 11th August, 2026 by Pete Downham KG Steel has awarded Primetals Technologies the contract to modernise its pickling line tandem cold mill (PLTCM) in Dangjin, Republic of Korea. The project includes a full upgrade of both basic and process automation systems, and will aid KG Steel in broadening product offerings and improving product quality. KG Steel is a leading South Korean producer of steel and cold-rolled products, including cold-rolled and galvanized steel, XTONE, and tin plate steel. The new automation system will leverage AI technologies, which support the physical models, in order to improve target values for strip thickness and flatness. This technology will allow KG Steel to produce a wider range of cold-rolled products. Operators on the PLTCM will also benefit from a revamped human-machine interface (HMI) that provides better guidance and situational awareness. The switch to the new system will utilise the 'shadow mode and switch-over' setup, which will see Primetals connect the new system to the mill environment while the existing one is still in operation, leading to minimal downtime. Primetals to upgrade Nucor continuous caster. Published 30th July, 2026 by Pete Downham US steel producer Nucor Steel Decatur has selected Primetals Technologies for the revamp of the continuous thin-slab caster at its Decatur, Alabama plant. The project is set to upgrade the segments with wider, more robust frames with improved spray patterns while meeting current quality and production targets. The upgrade will also see the caster go from a two-roller to a three-roller design, resulting in 50% more bearing capacity. Primetals highlighted that the upgrade will enable Nucor Steel Decatur to implement dynamic soft-core reduction in the future, improving internal product quality. The caster will be the first Primetals Technologies-designed continuous thin-slab caster in Nucor, and will be completely manufactured, assembled, tested and commissioned in Alabama. The project is set to take three years to complete, with Primetals also providing the full spectrum of engineering services for machine design, including engineering analyses for the frames, roller assemblies, support structures, and secondary cooling.
