Requirements
  • Completion of an accredited Registered Nurse academic program with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in at least one state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification.
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification.
  • One year of recent Critical Care Registered Nurse work experience is required.
  • The position does not provide sponsorship.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above the shoulders during the work shift.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds from floor to waist.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to carry up to 40 pounds a reasonable distance.
  • Ability to push or pull with 30 pounds of force.
Responsibilities
  • Provide critical care nursing to Intensive Care Unit patients.
  • Obtain patient history and pertinent family history.
  • Assess patients and plan appropriate nursing care.
  • Document plans of care and care provided in patients’ medical records.
  • Verify transcription of physician orders and comply with facility policy regarding verbal orders.
  • Carry out prescribed physician orders and document them in inpatient medical records.
  • Communicate pertinent patient data to the Charge Nurse or physician as appropriate.
  • Reassess patients’ conditions and revise plans of care based on identified problems.
  • Administer medications and intravenous therapies.
  • Maintain knowledge of the actions and usual dosages of commonly used emergency drugs and their locations on the crash cart.
  • Assess and document patient responses to administered medications.
  • Interpret cardiac rhythms and their implications.
  • Initiate appropriate measures during emergencies, therapies, and surgical or diagnostic procedures.
  • Instruct patients and their families regarding prescribed medications, therapies, and surgical or diagnostic procedures.
  • Assess patient and family knowledge levels, implement instruction plans, and record demonstrated understanding.
  • Operate defibrillators, electrocardiogram machines, cardiac monitors, and other emergency technical equipment.
  • Care for patients with Swan-Ganz catheters, arterial lines, and mechanical ventilators.
  • Participate in discharge planning.
  • Initiate life-saving measures in the absence of physicians.
  • Assure the content and correctness of prepared reports and sign documents to validate their content.
  • Apply the VA’s customer service standards and maintain helpful, courteous, and respectful conduct.
  • Respect patient rights, including visual and auditory privacy.
  • Assess intake and output of fluids every shift and more frequently when indicated.
  • Review laboratory data and electronic medical records.
  • Titrate medications.
  • Manage feeding tubes, including aspirating for gastric residue before intermittent feeds and every four hours for continuous tube feedings.
  • Perform urinary catheter care using soap-and-water cleaning every 12 hours or as required.
  • Ensure medication orders from the previous shift are noted and carried out or transcribed into medical records.
