About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in infrastructure engineering, software engineering, network engineering, or network security with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a relevant technical degree; alternatively, an advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering with 6 years of prior work experience; alternatively, 12 or more years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Advanced proficiency in UNIX operating systems administration, including Red Hat Linux, Ubuntu, and CentOS.
  • Advanced proficiency in virtualization best practices and fundamentals.
  • Advanced understanding of network and communications systems fundamentals.
  • Intermediate understanding of network and communications systems and network monitoring concepts.
  • Ability to coach and train others as part of knowledge transfer.
  • Ability to execute on multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain effective results.
  • Ability to determine methods and procedures for new assignments and provide guidance to other technical positions.
  • Advanced proficiency in most listed technical domains, with demonstrated ability to design and implement solutions within established network architecture standards and deep troubleshooting expertise across common virtualized infrastructure platforms and shared network services such as DNS, networking, and storage.
  • Dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and mouse and handle other computer components.
  • Willingness to undertake some domestic travel (<10%) and international travel (<5%) for cross-training, capacity management, and meetings with off-site personnel.
  • Willingness to undertake temporary work assignments in other states, counties, or countries as operational requirements dictate.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Current passport in good standing.
  • Valid authorization to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, design, and own lifecycle management of virtualized infrastructure, automation frameworks, and shared network services at scale.
  • Drive complex projects, including evaluating new technologies, leading infrastructure modernization efforts, and architecting resilient, secure systems aligned with organizational goals.
  • Provide technical leadership across teams and guide and mentor peers and junior engineers.
  • Define VMware and hybrid-cloud infrastructure strategy across environments and regions, including capacity planning and refresh cycles.
  • Own the integration strategy between on-premises virtualization and hybrid cloud, such as AWS.
  • Own end-to-end global shared-services architecture for DNS, load balancing/F5, certificates/PKI, and NTP, including standards and security posture.
  • Approve significant shared-services architecture changes organization-wide.
  • Lead observability platform strategy, including tooling selection, instrumentation standards, and SLO governance, for the broader engineering organization.
  • Set automation and Infrastructure-as-Code standards adopted across teams.
  • Lead cross-team technical initiatives and represent Infrastructure Engineering in architecture reviews.
  • Mentor engineers across all levels and serve as a senior escalation point rather than a routine on-call responder.
  • Design physical data center layout, power redundancy (UPS, generators, ATS), cooling (hot/cold aisle containment), and rack density planning.
  • Establish cabling standards and structured cabling design.
  • Plan power, cooling, and rack-space capacity years ahead, beyond server capacity.
  • Design core, distribution, and access network layers; spanning tree; and redundant routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP for larger environments.
  • Design high availability through HSRP/VRRP, link aggregation, and redundant paths.
  • Develop firewall architecture and segmentation strategy.
  • Troubleshoot at packet level using tools such as Wireshark and tcpdump when vendors disagree about the issue.
  • Design VMware/Hyper-V clusters for HA and DRS, resource pools, vMotion, and storage migration strategies.
  • Design Linux at an architect level, including Active Directory forest/domain design, trust relationships, Group Policy Object strategy, and DNS/DHCP redundancy.
  • Plan hardware capacity and lifecycle refresh cycles.
  • Design storage area network systems, including Fibre Channel zoning, multipathing, storage tiering, and performance troubleshooting for IOPS and latency bottlenecks.
  • Design backup architecture using RPO/RTO-driven strategies, 3-2-1 backup rules, and offsite or air-gapped copies, using tools such as Veeam, Commvault, or Rubrik.
  • Design and test disaster recovery failover between sites.
  • Design for no single point of failure across power, network, compute, and storage.
  • Run real disaster recovery tests and own recovery time and recovery point objective discussions with the business.
  • Own security posture through network segmentation, internal firewalling, and privileged access management.
  • Manage patching and vulnerability programs at scale.
  • Manage physical security controls for on-premises equipment.
  • Safely maintain aging hardware and software while planning eventual replacement.
  • Bridge on-premises systems with SaaS or hybrid-cloud components, including email, identity, and backup-to-cloud.
