Requirements
  • The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to criminal justice, indigent defense, social justice issues, and/or the Harlem communities.
  • The candidate must meet the First Department Qualifications for the 18b Homicide Panel, including actual court experience in at least sixty criminal cases with the specified dispositions, hearings or litigated motions, jury trials, and expert cross-examinations.
  • The candidate must be able and dedicated to working with experts in technical areas such as DNA, fingerprint analysis, hair analysis, and cell phone triangulation.
  • The candidate must possess the organizational and administrative skills required to handle a homicide caseload.
  • The candidate must possess strong writing skills.
Responsibilities
  • Provide legal representation to residents of Northern Manhattan in Manhattan's criminal courts.
  • Appear frequently in court and litigate arraignments, grand jury presentations, legal arguments, hearings, and trials.
  • Participate in scheduled on-call intake shifts from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. to arraign new homicide defense clients.
  • Interview clients and their families in the office or local jails.
  • Conduct legal research and write pre-pleading letters, motions, and pre-sentencing memoranda for clients.
  • Direct and coordinate work performed by investigators, mitigation specialists, paralegals, and at least one other staff attorney as a second seat.
  • Collaborate with family defense, immigration defense, housing defense, and other civil defense colleagues to obtain comprehensive legal outcomes for clients.
  • Review, digest, and organize discovery and comply with reciprocal discovery rules.
  • File motions, briefs, and related documents frequently and on a timely basis.
  • Provide oral advocacy in negotiations and arguments in homicide cases.
  • Split work time between Manhattan's downtown courts and the main office in Central Harlem.
  • Collaborate with and mentor less experienced staff and provide training on emerging homicide-defense issues.
  • Communicate clearly and respond to clients who are often under significant stress.
Desired Qualifications
  • Admission to the New York State Bar or awaiting admission.
  • Bilingual Spanish-language ability.
