Nissan planning five new body-on-frame 4x4s, reports suggest. Nissan is reportedly developing five new body-on-frame SUVs and utes, including a revived Xterra and next-generation Frontier. 24 Aug 2026 4:00 PM 4X4 Australia staff As reported by Automotive News, the program is expected to span Nissan and Infiniti, with the Xterra, next-generation Frontier, a body-on-frame Pathfinder and two Infiniti SUVs reportedly making up the five-model family. The Xterra is the first model to be confirmed, with Nissan targeting a late-2028 US launch. It will use the new body-on-frame platform and is expected to be offered with V6 and hybrid powertrains. The Xterra name was last used in 2015, and its return will put Nissan back into the rugged midsize SUV market alongside vehicles such as the Ford Bronco. The next-generation Frontier is also expected to use the new platform, while reports indicate Nissan could offer a body-on-frame Pathfinder alongside the current unibody model. The two Infiniti SUVs would take the same architecture into the premium market. For 4x4 buyers, the move would give Nissan a much larger range of truck-based SUVs and utes built around the same basic architecture. Nissan has not yet confirmed all five vehicles or provided a detailed rollout schedule, so the broader plan could still change. The Xterra, however, gives 4X4 Australia the first look at what the new platform will bring. With the Xterra due from 2028, Nissan could soon have a much stronger presence in the increasingly competitive off-road SUV and ute market. What does this mean for Australia? For Australia, the big question is whether any of the new models will be adapted for right-hand drive. There is no confirmation of Australian availability at this stage, but a larger body-on-frame range would give Nissan more options in a market where capable 4x4 SUVs and utes remain hugely popular. 4X4 Australia staff Follow 4X4 Australia on Google Get more 4x4 news, reviews and gear stories from 4X4 Australia in your Google feeds. Cedric Ratinaud becomes new Global brand Head of Nissan Motor Corporation. * By MT Bureau * August 24, 2026 Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Corporation has announced the appointment of Cedric Ratinaud as the new Global Head of Brand, Nissan. Ratinaud previously served as the Director of Creative and Campaigns for Global Communications at Nissan Motor Corporation, a role he held from April 2024. Prior to that position, he worked as General Manager of INFINITI Global Communications. His background includes two decades in the automotive sector across communications, marketing communications, and brand management roles. His career at Nissan spans operations across Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Most recently, he served as General Manager of Brand, Marketing, and Communications for Nissan Motor Asia Pacific, operating out of Thailand.
Nissan has abandoned plans to establish Nissan Bank U.S. in Salt Lake City, citing cost reductions and long-term financial health, Automotive News reported. The automaker had applied to the FDIC in June 2025 to form an industrial loan company (ILC), which would have allowed it to fund car loans through cheaper insured deposits rather than expensive bond market borrowing. The timing is significant. Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis all received conditional FDIC approval for similar banks earlier this year. This gives Nissan's competitors access to lower-cost funding, potentially translating to better financing rates for customers. Nissan is midway through its Re:Nissan restructuring plan, which targets 20,000 job cuts and a reduction from 17 to 10 assembly plants. The company posted a net loss of 533.1 billion yen in the fiscal year ended March. Standing up a bank would have required substantial capital reserves — Stellantis was required to commit at least $150 million.
Nissan trusts its positioning in Mexico against new competitors: CEO. The Japanese automaker can defend itself against new players in Mexico, said Iván Espinosa, global leader of the automaker. August 20, 2026 | 02:32 PM Mexico City - Nissan sees in Mexico the market where it is best positioned against the arrival of new competitors, amid the growth of brands from China in the country and across Latin America, said the automaker's CEO, Iván Espinosa. The confidence is based, he noted, on the company's 65 years of presence in the country, where it produces most of the vehicles that supply the domestic market and has a solid supply chain, distribution, as well as all industry disciplines, from engineering to purchasing. "We can do whatever is necessary in Mexico to defend ourselves and continue satisfying consumers," said Espinosa in a press conference. Nissan leads sales in the Mexican market, but like other automakers such as General Motors or Volkswagen, it has ceded share in a market where Chinese competitors are making their way. According to Inegi figures, Nissan's market share went from 20% in 2019 to 17% in the first half of 2026, while Chinese automakers raised their market share from less than 1% to 12% in the same period, although the percentage could reach up to 17% considering automakers that do not report their data to the agency, according to estimates from the Mexican Association of Automobile Distributors (AMDA). Across the region, Chinese automakers such as BYD, Chery, Changan, GWM, Dongfeng, Foton, Geely, Jetour have also entered the top of vehicle sales with lower prices than other brands, promotions, or financing schemes. "We understand China's speed, we understand the technology they have, and we are working to implement it in our programs as well. You can soon expect fresh products tailored to the Latin American market that make use of the new technologies we have learned in China," Iván Espinosa mentioned to the media during his visit to Mexico. One of the measures adopted by the company in this context is reducing the development time of new models by 40% to 30 months. Nissan's CEO said that in the next 12 months they will launch six new models and three electrification technologies for Latin America, a region that represents 15% of global sales and where it produces 25% of its vehicles with three plants in Mexico and one in Brazil. The company expects these new models to allow it to reach 500,000 units sold in Latin America. Restructuring. The Mexican engineer took over the direction of Nissan in April 2025 after 20 years of career at the company with the mission of turning the business around after years of declining sales and financial pressures. The strategy led by Espinosa has focused on cost efficiency, redefining market and product strategy, and strategic alliances. Under the restructuring, Nissan will reduce its model portfolio and global production capacity through measures such as plant consolidation, which in Mexico involved the closure of a complex in the state of Morelos in March 2026. The company has three other plants in the country in the state of Aguascalientes. The executive affirmed that the strategy has yielded results and the current financial structure is solid, even in an environment of tariffs imposed by the United States on vehicle imports. "I have full confidence that we have the resources, the capability, and the necessary engineering to compete in the global market without any problem," he mentioned. Nissan Sentra 2027 improves its driving and debuts a Midnight Edition. The Nissan Sentra 2027 focuses on smoother driving, more technology, and a new Midnight Edition for the SR trim. Aug 20, 2026, 5:42 PM EDT Nissan wants the Sentra to remain an attractive option for those who still prefer a compact sedan. For the 2027 model, the brand not only changes some appearance details but also works on one of the elements most felt behind the wheel: transmission response. The other addition is on the visual side. The Sentra SR can now include the Midnight Edition, a package that darkens many of the exterior elements and gives the sedan a more distinct personality. The offering maintains the model's practical approach but adds some details for those looking for something less conventional. An SR with a bolder look. The Midnight Edition is available on the Sentra SR and adds different exterior elements in black. These include the emblems, window trim, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Super Black roof completes the offering with a two-tone configuration that creates greater contrast with the bodywork. The package has an additional cost of $650, so buyers can give the vehicle a sportier look without having to change versions. Nissan is working on the CVT response. The most interesting update is hidden under the bodywork. Nissan revised the programming of the Xtronic CVT transmission to achieve a response that feels more progressive and natural when accelerating. The intention is to reduce that unpleasant sensation that some continuously variable transmissions can generate when the driver demands a quick response. According to Nissan, the new calibration seeks to make the delivery more linear and the pedal reaction more predictable. This can be especially noticeable when merging onto a highway, overtaking another vehicle, or moving through streets with constant traffic. It is not about increasing power but about making the engine and transmission work in a more pleasant way for the person behind the wheel. An interior committed to technology. The cabin retains a modern proposal and adds a fairly complete technological equipment for a sedan of this size. In fact, the Sentra's interior was included in the Wards 10 Best Interiors & UX 2026 list. Among the available elements are two 12.3-inch screens, which bring together vehicle information and the multimedia system in a more sophisticated-looking configuration. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available, while the Qi2 wireless charger appears as another technological alternative. The Zero Gravity seats aim to provide greater comfort on long trips, and Nissan also highlights the available legroom in the front seats. Safety for everyday driving. The 2027 Sentra comes with a long list of driving assistance systems. The equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, lane departure prevention, and traffic sign recognition. It can also incorporate blind spot warning, blind spot intervention, and rear cross-traffic alert. Intelligent cruise control is part of the equipment and is designed to make highway journeys more bearable. This is joined by the Intelligent Around View Monitor, which facilitates maneuvers by showing a perspective around the car. ProPILOT Assist is also available to help in traffic situations with frequent stops and starts, although the driver must maintain control of the vehicle. 2027 Nissan Sentra prices. The 2027 Sentra starts at $22,890 in the United States for the S trim. The SV version has a price of $23,590, while the SR starts at $24,990. For those who want the most equipped configuration, the SL reaches $27,990. The new Midnight Edition can be added to the SR for an additional $650.
