Requirements
  • A Master’s degree in library/information science from an American Library Association-accredited institution is required.
  • A minimum of three years of work experience in library technical services operations, specifically within a cataloging/metadata unit, working on original and copy cataloging or metadata, is required.
  • Experience with the MARC 21 standard is required.
  • Strong knowledge and work experience using one or more classification schemes, including Dewey, Library of Congress, and/or Superintendent of Documents classification, is required.
  • Strong skill and experience using an integrated library system is required.
  • Experience cataloging serials and maps is required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, primarily Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, and other business applications is required.
  • Ability to adhere to national bibliographic standards set forth in Resource Description and Access for electronic, print, microform, and other material formats is required.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with paraprofessionals, library professionals, and agency personnel is required.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise discretion, initiative, and judgment is required.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and collaborative work environment is required.
  • Organizational and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Ability to perform diverse and complex tasks accurately and with attention to detail is required.
  • Written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Knowledge of Resource Description and Access core elements is required.
  • Knowledge of OCLC Connexion is required.
  • Personnel may be required to participate in progress briefings with the Contracting Officer’s Representative, the technical advisor for the task order, and management as needed, including reporting the overall percentage of work completed.
  • Ability to sit for long periods and maintain focus on computer screens or detailed paperwork is required.
  • Ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to twenty-five pounds, including files, books, and other materials, is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform original and copy cataloging of monographs and serials in OCLC Connexion, following Resource Description and Access, Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition, MARC 21, and local cataloging standards.
  • Edit and enhance existing bibliographic records to meet Resource Description and Access, MARC 21, and updated local cataloging practices.
  • Assign controlled subject headings using Library of Congress Subject Headings.
  • Assign controlled headings for series titles and corporate authors.
  • Conduct research to determine the need for new name authorities and propose updates or additions to senior catalogers.
  • Create, update, and modify holding and item records as instructed.
  • Manage and adjust serial publication patterns and frequency as needed.
  • Maintain detailed metrics and provide regular activity reports.
