Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • The candidate must be qualified as at least a Single Resource Boss and hold FAL2 qualification when instructing S-212.
  • The candidate must hold M-410 or an equivalent teaching qualification and be able to serve as lead instructor for 100- and 200-level National Wildfire Coordinating Group courses.
  • The candidate must have experience implementing National Wildfire Coordinating Group classes in person and/or virtually, including S-130/190 and S-212.
  • The candidate must demonstrate clear verbal communication, strong organizational skills, strong interpersonal skills, and enthusiasm for teaching.
  • The candidate must have effective knowledge of common software applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite.
  • The candidate must pass the arduous pack test annually and maintain a current Red Card for the position being performed.
  • Instructors on S-212 classes must maintain current FAL2 qualification or higher.
  • The candidate must provide a resume, fire master record, copies of all National Wildfire Coordinating Group certificates, and all completed task book pages before employment.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with implementing training events for The Ember Alliance and partner organizations, including state, federal, nonprofit, youth corps, and Department of Defense organizations.
  • Implement blended curricula through instructor-led online instruction and hands-on experiential learning.
  • Teach non-traditional soft skills in National Wildfire Coordinating Group courses, including self-care and stress management, conflict resolution, anti-bullying, and active bystander practices.
  • Train underserved and underrepresented populations, including people of color, women, landowners, and Department of Defense personnel.
  • Build skills and confidence for fire practitioners from varied backgrounds and experience levels in an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Manage work assignments with minimal direction from supervisors.
  • Oversee staff, volunteers, and individuals or crews from other agencies or organizations when serving in a training leadership role.
  • Occasionally participate in prescribed fire operations and/or support a prescribed fire Incident Management Team during training events.
  • Work variable schedules that may include 10- to 12-hour days, weekends, extended periods outside normal business hours, up to 14 consecutive days, and extended travel.
  • Submit a one-page cover letter, two professional references from people who have observed the candidate teach or a teaching video, a resume, and a fire master record.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience teaching diverse populations, particularly young adults ages 18–25 from underserved and underrepresented communities, including Conservation Crews or Youth Corps.
  • Knowledge of adult learning pedagogy.
  • Experience working with partner organizations to organize and implement training events.
  • Experience serving as cadre on a Training Exchange.
  • Experience working on Department of Defense lands or military installations.
  • Fire Effects Monitor qualification.
  • Incident Commander Type 4 qualification.
  • Wilderness First Responder or higher medical qualification.
  • Strong saw skills and saw skill training experience.
