About the job

Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Mechatronics, with significant demonstrated electrical engineering experience involving power systems, electrical design, or electrical safety in complex environments, related field, and at least 4 years of experience in environmental health and safety worldwide regulations, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in electrical safety, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and control design for electrical systems, equipment, and high-energy infrastructure, including medium-voltage/high-energy distribution, switchgear, UPS, battery rooms/energy storage, generators, and commissioning/maintenance interfaces.
  • Experience applying electrical safety regulations and standards, including NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, OSHA electrical safety requirements (including 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S), and IEEE 1584, to electrical design reviews, hazard assessments, and operational risk reduction.

  • Experience translating technical electrical and process safety risks into practical, implementable recommendations for engineering and operational stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and technical communication skills, with the ability to influence safety outcomes through collaboration rather than authority.
  • Experience supporting safety in complex, high-energy infrastructure environments, such as datacenters, industrial facilities, or mission-critical systems.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
Responsibilities

  • Influence design and operations stakeholders through data, risk framing, and practical engineering controls.
  • Review electrical design artifacts relevant to safety, including one-lines, protection/coordination intent, equipment-room access/clearance impacts, and maintainability constraints.
  • Perform EHS process safety risk assessments for existing facilities, new facility designs, and emerging technologies.
  • Apply process safety and hazard analysis methodologies, such as HAZID and HAZOP, to identify hazards, evaluate risk, and recommend effective controls.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve global EHS programs to reduce process and operational safety risk.
  • Partner with datacenter engineering teams to integrate technical safety considerations into designs and enable safe operation of facilities and infrastructure.
  • Analyze EHS performance metrics and indicators to identify trends, prioritize risk-reduction opportunities, and inform program improvements.
  • Conduct inspections, assessments, and design reviews to verify compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and Microsoft policies.
  • Perform workplace risk and exposure assessments across electrical, mechanical, and operational hazard categories.
  • Support incident investigations, including root cause analysis and identification, communication, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, or a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics, with significant demonstrated electrical engineering experience involving power systems, electrical design, or electrical safety in complex environments.
  • At least 5 years of experience in electrical engineering, electrical safety, or power systems engineering in datacenter, industrial, or other complex infrastructure environments, including reviewing electrical systems, conducting electrical hazard risk assessments, and recommending engineering and operational controls.
  • Professional Engineer (Electrical) license or equivalent registration.

What believers are saying

  • US corporate staff receive education support: eligible, approved graduate coursework qualifies for up to $10,000 annually.
  • Cloud demand expands: July 2026 results showed Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43% year-over-year in fiscal Q4.
  • Investment has an earnings cushion: July 2026 results reported $155.2 billion consolidated operating profit for fiscal 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Performance reviews include security: every Microsoft employee must discuss their security contribution with their manager.
  • Office flexibility depends on the role: Microsoft's postings specify requirements ranging from fully remote to fully on-site.
  • Cloud capacity faces local limits: Microsoft describes power-grid delays and water constraints affecting US datacenter expansion.

Citi's Radke: AI splits software into winners like Microsoft and losers like Adobe

Citi's Tyler Radke says AI is splitting software into winners and losers. Radke, co-head of US software equity research, told Bloomberg Television that AI is lifting growth at Microsoft, Palantir, and Snowflake. He expects Microsoft's revenue growth to top 20%, up from 18% in the quarter ended June 30. Office costs under $100 a month and bundles security and Copilot, while rivals charge hundreds of dollars, leaving room to raise prices. Adobe and smaller application vendors face pressure as IT budgets shift to AI, he said. Salesforce agreed to buy Braze for $47.50 per share in cash. Radke questions whether Salesforce can speed up organic growth after half a dozen large deals. If financing stays costly, he expects scale to decide who survives.

Xbox's non-gamer CEO cuts thousands of jobs in a bid to save the $21B gaming unit

Asha Sharma, 38, who had no video game experience, became Xbox chief executive in February, replacing Phil Spencer. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella picked her to turn around the $21 billion business, where profit margin sits near 3%. Sharma has cut 1,868 jobs as part of a plan to reduce headcount by 3,200 over the next year. She is also consolidating studios and shifting money to top franchises such as Minecraft and Blizzard titles. She plans a next-generation handheld by the 2027 holiday season and a new console by the 2028 holidays. Xbox also plans to overhaul Game Pass. Some observers wonder whether Microsoft is preparing Xbox for a sale or spinoff.

Cash beats debt: stronger balance sheets sit closer to 52-week highs in all five pairs

Companies with more cash than debt are holding up better as inflation hits 3.7%, the 10-year Treasury yields about 5.1%, and US oil tops $100 a barrel. An analysis of five industry pairs found the stronger company sat closer to its 52-week high in every case. In four, debt made the difference. Microsoft, with $20 billion of net cash, is 1.8% below its high. CoreWeave, with $46 billion of net debt, is 56.3% below. Exxon is 0.4% below its high, against 35.6% for American Airlines. Nucor trails its high by 4.9%, while Celanese trails by 30.8%. Alphabet is down 14.4%, while Charter, with $96 billion of net debt, is down 57.0%. Costco and Nike are the exception: Nike's gap stems from falling sales, not debt.

CAS brings 150 years of curated science into Microsoft Copilot for pharma and chemical R&D

CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, has made its CAS Connections tool available in Microsoft Copilot. The connector gives Copilot users access to the CAS Content Collection and CAS Newton, an agentic AI built for science. It targets pharmaceutical, life sciences, and chemical research teams. The tool brings more than 150 years of CAS-curated scientific knowledge into the apps where they work. A chemist in Microsoft Word, for example, can confirm a compound's CAS Registry Number and check reaction conditions. An analyst in Teams can check whether a substance appears in patent literature. "Scientists, patent teams, and business analysts can easily access this trusted information directly within Copilot," said Chantrelle Nielsen, principal product manager, Copilot Platform, at Microsoft. The connector is available in the Microsoft Marketplace.

Microsoft reportedly weighs 20% Azure cost cuts as AI spending hits $175B

Microsoft is reportedly weighing cost cuts of at least 20% at Azure, its cloud unit. Azure President Girish Bablani asked senior leaders in his roughly 11,500-person unit to find the savings, according to reports. Microsoft denies that Azure leadership has directed teams to develop cost-cutting plans. The reports come as AI infrastructure spending pressures margins. Microsoft expects about $50 billion in capital expenditures for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 and roughly $175 billion for calendar 2026. Demand remains strong. Fourth-quarter revenue rose 18% to $90 billion, and Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43%. Microsoft shares are up 10% this year.
