  • Management relocated all 62 Hornbacher's Express workers, preserving labor during the June 2026 closure.

What critics are saying

UNFI to sell 3 Cub stores.

UNFI to sell 3 Cub stores. The company said transferring ownership of the Minneapolis-area supermarkets to Jerry's Enterprises will support its "efforts to strengthen the business and become Minnesota's No. 1 grocer." Published Aug. 17, 2026 Dive brief: * United Natural Foods, Inc. has agreed to sell three Cub Foods locations to franchise partner Jerry's Enterprises, a spokesperson for the grocery retailer and wholesaler confirmed Friday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. * The stores, in Minneapolis, Monticello and St. Anthony, Minnesota, will remain under the Cub banner. The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reported the transaction last week. * UNFI's decision to sell the supermarkets is connected with "Cub's ongoing efforts to strengthen the business and become Minnesota's No. 1 grocer," the grocer said in an emailed statement. Dive insight: UNFI concluded that selling the stores to Jerry's will allow the grocery company to direct resources toward strengthening the Cub banner, the spokesperson indicated. The company's retail segment, which also includes East Coast chain Shoppers, has posted sagging sales in recent quarters. "Jerry's has a proven track record of operating high-performing Cub stores and delivering a great experience for shoppers, and this transition will allow for continued investment in these locations while supporting Cub's efforts to build a stronger, more competitive network across Minnesota," the spokesperson wrote in an email. The spokesperson did not say when the sale is expected to close, but indicated that the stores would receive "ongoing enhancements and investments." Speaking during UNFI's investor day last December, David Best, the company's president and CEO of retail, said UNFI determined that Cub needs to improve its focus on shoppers, strengthen its assortment and deliver better value. "One of the things I've long felt is all the headlines are about how these big mass players are gaining share in food. And that's true, but what's often underreported is the fact that there's lots of differentiating unique retailers out there also winning and breaking through in the marketplace," said Best, a former president and chief operating officer at Coborn's Inc. who arrived at UNFI in August 2025. UNFI CEO Sandy Douglas indicated during the investor day event that while the company was optimistic about Cubs's prospects, it considers the division to be in turnaround mode and decided not to include the value it hopes to derive from the chain. "For investors, the Cub turnaround is not part of our projections," Douglas said. "It's something that, as David succeeds, will generate incremental value for the business."

Home / about / blog / Spotlight event in St. Cloud celebrates partnerships and resilience. Community partnership in action. On April 8, about 50 local leaders from St. Cloud and surrounding areas gathered for a Spotlight Goodwill event at the St. Cloud Goodwill store, celebrating the strength of community partnerships and highlighting the real-life impact of Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota's (GESMN) career services in the region. Attendees, including Waite Park Mayor Ken Schmitt, connected with GESMN staff, toured the store and program spaces and learned firsthand how support from community partners helps create career opportunities for Minnesotans. Underscoring challenges many individuals face - from lack of transportation and childcare to navigating employment with a disability - GESMN's mission is to eliminate barriers to work and independence. In 2025, nearly 6,000 people across the state accessed GESMN's services, supported by the retail sales of donated goods and strong local partnerships. GESMN has served the St. Cloud tri-county area for nearly 30 years through employment readiness programs, youth-focused initiatives and family support services. The event also honored local employer partners who help open doors for job seekers. 2026 GESMN St. Cloud partner honorees included: * Coborn's Commissary: Received the Employer Award for its commitment to hiring and supporting Goodwill participants, helping create inclusive employment opportunities in the St. Cloud region. * Stearns County Child Support: Received the Partner Award for its strong collaboration with GESMN and dedication to supporting family stability and employment success for individuals and families. Support that makes a difference. Participants of GESMN's services shared how the programs supported their growth and resilience. Gail, an Employment Services participant, spoke about her transformation through Goodwill support. "When I started with them, I was a scared introverted person with a self-esteem of a snail," Gail shared. "I've grown into a more confident woman." She added encouragement for others considering support from GESMN, "Don't be afraid, jump in with both feet and you'll never regret it." Alex, a participant in the FATHER Project, shared how employment and accountability changed his life. "I am now sober, have had a job for one year and have custody of my children," he said.
