Requirements
  • A Master's Degree and graduation from an accredited School of Nurse Anesthesia Program (CRNA) are required.
  • A current and valid State of Florida Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist license is required.
  • National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists certification is required.
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, HIV, Domestic Violence, and Preventing Medical Errors continuing education certifications are required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform all clinical functions under the medical direction or supervision of an Anesthesiologist using Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management protocols, privileges, policies, and procedures.
  • Obtain examinations, health histories, screening assessments, diagnostic evaluations, pre-anesthetic medications, and informed consent for anesthesia.
  • Document pre-anesthetic evaluations and all aspects of anesthesia-related care in the medical record.
  • Prepare and use anesthesia equipment, monitors, supplies, and drugs, and perform required safety checks.
  • Select and administer anesthetics, adjuvant and accessory drugs, fluids, and other treatments to maintain physiologic homeostasis and correct abnormal responses.
  • Perform tracheal intubation and extubation, place supraglottic airways, and provide mechanical ventilation.
  • Manage regional anesthetic techniques, including subarachnoid, epidural, caudal, plexus, major and peripheral nerve, intravenous regional, transtracheal, topical, and local infiltration blocks when appropriately credentialed.
  • Provide perianesthetic invasive and non-invasive monitoring and respond to abnormal findings with corrective action.
  • Recognize and treat cardiac dysrhythmias using perianesthetic electrocardiogram monitoring.
  • Manage fluid, blood, electrolyte, and acid-base balance.
  • Evaluate and treat emergency responses to anesthesia and provide pharmacological or supportive treatment to ensure adequate recovery.
  • Provide anesthesia care consistent with infection-control and anesthetic-safety principles.
  • Report the patient's physical and psychological condition, perianesthetic course, and anticipated problems to post-anesthetic care staff and physicians.
  • Provide post-anesthesia follow-up, evaluate responses and complications, take corrective action, and request consultation when indicated.
  • Initiate respiratory support and cardiovascular pharmacological or fluid support during the immediate post-anesthesia period.
  • Insert central intravenous, pulmonary artery, peripheral venous, and arterial catheters when appropriately credentialed, and perform arterial puncture for blood samples.
  • Identify and manage emergencies, including participating in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway maintenance, ventilation, tracheal intubation, pharmacologic cardiovascular support, and management of blood, fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance.
  • Provide respiratory and ventilator-care consultation and implementation.
  • Initiate and modify pain-relief therapy using drugs, regional anesthetic techniques, or other accepted modalities as directed by the attending anesthesiologist.
  • Select or prescribe medications and treatment modalities related to perianesthetic care with consultation or collaboration when appropriate.
  • Accept additional responsibilities and perform procedures within the individual CRNA's education, expertise, and credentials.
