Gene therapy restores hearing in 9 of 12 children with inherited deafness

A gene therapy treatment has restored hearing in children born deaf due to inherited OTOF gene variants. In a clinical trial, nine of 12 children with profound deafness gained meaningful hearing after receiving Otarmeni (lunsotogene parvec-cwha), developed by Regeneron. The treatment delivers a working copy of the otoferlin gene directly into the cochlea using a dual AAV1 vector. By 24 weeks, four patients achieved normal to near-normal hearing, whilst four others had mild to moderate hearing loss. Cincinnati Children's Hospital treated two siblings as part of the trial. Three-year-old Abdu went from hearing virtually nothing to normal range hearing within weeks. His one-year-old sister Sumaya also showed dramatic improvement. The therapy addresses OTOF-related congenital deafness, which accounts for approximately 1% of congenital deafness cases. Results were published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Nationwide Children's Hospital ties for first in Ohio, Midwest rankings.

Nationwide Children's Hospital ties for first in Ohio, Midwest rankings. Posted: Sep 22, 2026 / 11:30 AM EDT Updated: Sep 21, 2026 / 10:27 PM EDT COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) - Nationwide Children's Hospital has earned a place on the U.S. News & World Report Best Children's Hospitals Honor Roll for a 13th consecutive year. The Columbus-based hospital is one of 10 nationwide included on the 2026-27 Honor Roll. It tied Cincinnati Children's Hospital for No. 1 in Ohio, while the two Ohio hospitals and Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago shared the No. 1 Midwest ranking. Cincinnati Children's made the national Honor Roll for a 20th consecutive year. For the third year, U.S. News listed the Honor Roll hospitals alphabetically instead of ranking them numerically. The publication continues to assign numerical rankings to hospitals by state, region and individual medical specialty. See the latest NBC4 headlines in the video player above. Seven Nationwide Children's specialties ranked among the top 10 nationally: * No. 3 for gastroenterology and GI surgery: * No. 5 for urology * No. 6 for nephrology * No. 7 for pulmonology * No. 8 for cancer * No. 8 for neurology and neurosurgery * No. 8 for orthopedics The hospital ranked No. 13 for both diabetes and endocrine disorders and neonatal care. Its cardiology and heart surgery program ranked No. 23. The hospital was also included among the country's top 50 pediatric behavioral health programs for the third year. U.S. News does not assign individual numerical rankings within that category. "This recognition reflects our commitment to excellence and the extraordinary work of our teams, who provide exceptional care, pursue groundbreaking discoveries and support families through some of life's most challenging moments," Nationwide Children's CEO Tim Robinson said in a news release. U.S. News produces the annual rankings to help families and their doctors identify hospitals equipped to treat children with serious illnesses or complex medical needs. For the latest rankings, U.S. News and North Carolina research firm RTI International collected and analyzed information from 114 children's hospitals and surveyed thousands of pediatric specialists. Hospitals were evaluated on measures including clinical outcomes, compliance with established best practices, and the quality of resources directly related to patient care. For state and regional rankings, U.S. News gave more weight to strong performance across all 11 specialties than to a hospital's standing in any one specialty. Nationwide Children's employs more than 17,000 people, making it Ohio's 13th-largest employer. The health system provides more than 2 million patient visits annually and serves as the home of Ohio State University College of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics.

Cincinnati Children's again ranks top pediatric hospital in the state. Esther Launstein, Cincinnati Enquirer Mon, September 14, 2026 at 9:01 PM PDT Cincinnati Children's was ranked the best pediatric hospital in Ohio for the fifth year in a row, according to the latest report from U.S. News. The U.S. News & World Report's 20th edition of Best Children's Hospitals analyzed data from over 100 pediatric hospitals and surveyed more than 40,000 pediatric specialists. Hospitals were ranked based on patient safety, clinical resources, family involvement and patient outcomes − such as survival, infections and surgical complications − over a 3-year period. Cincinnati Children's, along with Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, also made the report's honor roll, a distinction awarded to the top 11 pediatric hospitals in the country that deliver high-quality care across multiple specialty areas. Cincinnati Children's has made the honor roll every year since the distinction started in 2009. Cincinnati Children's and Nationwide Children's each ranked highly across all specialties, tying for the best pediatric hospital in the state and the Midwest. "Every year, families from all 50 states and countries around the world seek us out when they need answers, options and hope," said Evaline Alessandrini, chief operating officer of Cincinnati Children's. Cincinnati Children's ranked highest in behavioral health, neonatology, cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery and pulmonology. "This distinction reflects the expertise, dedication and compassion of our physicians, nurses, researchers and staff - as well as the trust families place in us every day," said Steve Davis, president and chief executive officer of Cincinnati Children's. "Most important, it recognizes our unwavering commitment to helping every child achieve the best possible outcome."

Campbell County's Nikki Owen named Technician of year by KYTC for helping kids be safe.

Campbell County's Nikki Owen named Technician of year by KYTC for helping kids be safe. Campbell County Police Records Specialist Nikki Owen has been named the 2026 Technician of the Year by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Office of Highway Safety for her work helping Campbell County families keep children safe on the road. Owen received the award during the annual Governor's Occupant Protection Enforcement Award ceremony in Lexington. The ceremony recognizes law enforcement officers and safety professionals for their work promoting seat belt use, child passenger safety, and occupant protection across Kentucky. Owen was recognized for her work developing, planning, and implementing a Campbell County Police Department (CCPD) program that provides Campbell County residents with car seat education and installation assistance. Through the program, car seats may also be provided to families in need. "Nikki's commitment and hard work in bringing this program to the CCPD and developing it into an award-winning success reflects the dedication she brings to everything she does," said Campbell County Police Chief Craig Sorrell. "She truly enjoys helping people keep what they value most, their children, safe. We are always proud of Nikki and pleased that she was recognized for her efforts with this program." The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety presented awards for Technician, Instructor, and Child Passenger Safety Team of the Year, and recognized more than 120 state and local law enforcement officers for occupant protection enforcement efforts. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, properly installed car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers in passenger cars. In light trucks, SUVs, and minivans, car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 58% for infants and 59% for toddlers. Owen's work helps bring those safety practices directly to Campbell County families by providing hands-on assistance and education to help parents and caregivers properly protect children while traveling. CCPD is a Buckle Up for Life partner with Toyota and Cincinnati Children's Hospital. As part of the initiative, the CCPD is an official fitting station with a nationally certified child passenger safety technician on staff. Two Campbell County Police officers are also working to become certified child passenger safety technicians in October, expanding the department's ability to provide education and outreach while on patrol. Campbell County residents can call 859-547-3100 to schedule an appointment to have a child's car seat professionally installed or inspected for safety. Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The CCPD also has resources available to help families in need obtain a free car seat. Campbell County

Sheikh Khalifa Medical City launches integrated Paediatric spasticity programme.

Sheikh Khalifa Medical City launches integrated Paediatric spasticity programme. ABU DHABI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 02nd Sep, 2026) SEHA, a subsidiary of PureHealth, announced that SEHA's Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) has successfully performed its first Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) procedure in collaboration with Cincinnati Children's, marking the launch of a comprehensive spasticity management programme for children in the UAE. SDR is an advanced specialised neurosurgical intervention used to reduce lower-limb spasticity in children with spastic diplegia associated with cerebral palsy. The programme at SKMC is being implemented in line with the full clinical pathway followed by Cincinnati Children's, including careful patient selection and preoperative assessment, the surgical procedure, postoperative care, and long-term rehabilitation. The programme is built around a multidisciplinary model that extends beyond surgery itself. Children considered suitable for SDR undergo careful evaluation, followed by surgery and a structured rehabilitation pathway that may continue for up to one year. This includes intensive physiotherapy, regular reassessment, and coordinated follow-up designed to support mobility, function, and long-term clinical outcomes. Dr. Arun Babu Rajeswaran, consultant Neurosurgeon and Division Chief of Neurosurgery at SEHA's SKMC, said, "SDR is not a standalone surgery, but part of a carefully structured treatment programme that begins with rigorous patient selection and continues through long-term rehabilitation. It can make a meaningful difference in mobility and quality of life in children who are good candidates for the procedure. "Through our collaboration with Cincinnati Children's, we have been able to implement a comprehensive pathway that brings advanced spasticity management closer to families in the UAE." Dr. Francesco T. Mangano, Division Chief of Paediatric Neurosurgery at Cincinnati Children's, said, "This collaboration brings specialised SDR evaluation, surgery, and rehabilitation closer to children and families in a region where access to this level of care has previously required travel abroad. By working together to implement a complete clinical pathway, the teams at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City and Cincinnati Children's are helping ensure availability to world-class care closer to home."
