The country's National Health Service just signed a deal with Sword Health to deliver virtual physical therapy nationwide. The projected numbers are staggering, promising to slash patient waiting times by 97% and cut state healthcare costs by 45%. The automation gamble. This is no longer a pilot project or a corporate wellness perk. It is a sovereign nation integrating algorithmic care into its core infrastructure. For Sword Health, valued at $3 billion, this is a massive validation of its virtual model. Remote physiotherapy with AI from Sword Health arrives at the SNS to accelerate access to treatments. The AI-powered remote physiotherapy solution from Sword will be available on the SNS starting next week. According to the Portuguese unicorn, the goal is to reduce waiting lists, cut travel costs, and make access to healthcare more convenient for all users. Sword Health announced a strategic partnership with the National Health Service (SNS) in Portugal to provide remote physiotherapy services with Artificial Intelligence in all public hospitals and health centers, free of charge for users. In a statement, the company says the agreement was designed to transform the traditional methods of prescribing and performing physiotherapy in Portugal, with the aim of reducing waiting lists, cutting travel costs, and making access to healthcare more convenient for all users. The partnership follows Dispatch No. 1211/2026, published in the Diário da República in February, which officially opened the door of the SNS to remote physiotherapy with certified medical devices. Through it, family doctors in all health centers or any other SNS attending physician can now prescribe Sword's AI physiotherapy to patients suffering from common musculoskeletal conditions such as low back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, sprains, and muscle strains. Sword Health estimates that making the technology available on the SNS will reduce wait times for a patient to start treatment by 97%, as well as savings of around 45% for the state compared to the conventional model. According to the company, the clinical pathway begins with a prescription. During consultations, doctors identify the need for physiotherapy and, if the user so wishes, a prescription is issued for the remote AI service, available through the Sword website. Users will have an initial consultation with the company's clinical team and, within an average of two days, will receive at home a certified medical device to perform the exercises of their therapeutic plan. Sword details that, thanks to AI, the execution of movements is analyzed and corrected in real time, ensuring they are performed correctly and safely. The results and performance of each session are immediately shared with the clinical team, who monitor the user and adjust the therapeutic plan as needed, and are also available to answer any questions that arise during treatment. "For over 10 years, we started in Portugal with a clear and urgent mission: to solve the problem of lack of access to quality healthcare, in a traditional system that was not scalable," says Virgílio Bento, Founder and CEO of Sword Health. The executive highlights that the company has proven the vision of its AI-powered healthcare platform in the US market and by working with several European health systems.
